Job Description
- Assignment in a comprehensive cancer center with 318 acute care beds, specializing in cancer diagnosis.
- Floating between MedSurg and PCU Oncology units including:
- Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT)
- Acute Leukemia
- Hematology
- Medical Oncology
- PCU Oncology
- Gynecological Oncology
- Urology
- Colorectal
- Surgical Oncology
- Corrections Healthcare
- Heavy focus on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention.
- Shifts primarily nights with day/night rotating shifts available.
- Staffing ratios:
- PCU: 1:3 (can be 1:4 with mixed acuity)
- MedSurg Tele: ideally 1:4, can be 1:5
- Weekend shifts variable based on unit needs.
- No set/blocked scheduling; self-scheduling requests are submitted and balanced before final schedule posting.
- Orientation:
- First week: Monday-Friday day shift orientation
- Weeks 2-3: Five bedside orientation shifts
- Then independent practice
Requirements
- Minimum 2+ years of experience in high acuity PCU level or higher.
- Oncology experience preferred but not required.
Certifications Required
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
Compliance & Background Checks
- 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including SS trace, counties lived/worked, nationwide check, sex offender registry, and MVR if driving is required.
- FBI and BCI fingerprinting required within 1 year of start, with specific Ohio codes for healthcare.
- Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring.
- Education accreditation verification from accredited nursing programs (CCNE, ACEN, NLN CNEA, CASN).
- Transcript or diploma verification required.
- Pending background check attestation required if fingerprint results are pending.
Health & Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease.
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccine (adult dose after age 11/12).
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year; TB questionnaire required annually in lieu of test.
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: 2 MMR vaccines or positive titer; boosters required if low titer.
- Hepatitis B: titer or 3-vaccine series; declination accepted.
- Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titer; medical exemptions reviewed.
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (includes amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cannabinoids, cocaine, methadone, methaqualone, opiates, PCP, propoxyphene).
- Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31); decliners must wear a mask.
- COVID-19 vaccine not required but strongly recommended.
Competencies & Exams
- Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam required prior to start.
- Unit-specific competency exams required.
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required for all RNs within 1 year of start (with some unit exceptions); must be updated annually.
- Remediation process in place for failed EKG exams with up to three attempts.
Additional Requirements
- 2 professional references required; at least one must be from a manager or formal leadership.
- Employment application and skills checklist required.
- Annual orientation safety manual acknowledgement.
- License verification within 30 days of start.
- NURSYS verification for RNs.
Facility Policies
- Dress code and hand hygiene policy must be reviewed and signed.
- Confidential Fraud, Waste, and Abuse reporting training and acknowledgment required annually.
- Ethics and compliance policies must be reviewed and signed annually.
