Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Chemotherapy

Location: Bridgeport, Connecticut
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 12 weeks


Job Description

  • Chemotherapy certification required (ONS/ONCC).
  • Work schedule: 12-hour day shifts (07:00 - 19:30), every other weekend and holidays as needed.
  • Must be able to float to other Medical-Surgical units as needed.
  • Facility type: Short term acute care hospital, Level II Trauma Center.
  • Charting system: EPIC.
  • Scrubs color: Royal blue.

Required Certifications

  • Chemotherapy (ONS/ONCC)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA or ARC only
  • NIH Stroke Certification (required for all RNs except Behavioral Health, Case Management, Home Health, OR, Pediatric specialties, NICU, Labor and Delivery)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA or ARC only
  • Other certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., TNCC, PALS, NRP) – verify unit-specific requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse license in Connecticut.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Minimum of 1 year oncology nursing experience, with oncology experience within the last year.
  • Chemotherapy certification (ONS/ONCC).
  • ACLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • PALS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
  • Experience with EPIC electronic health record system.

Background and Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check required within 12 months of start; must be updated annually.
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start.
  • Education verification and transcript/diploma requirements apply.
  • Sex offender search required.
  • Foreign equivalency education evaluation required for internationally educated candidates.

Competencies and Testing

  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam (must score 85%).
  • Color Blind Testing (required for all candidates starting 8/2/2024; must score 80% or higher).
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam required for certain units (Telemetry, MS/Tele, ER, ICU, Progressive Care, PACU, IR/Cath Lab, Endoscopy, GI).
  • EPIC testing required for RNs with EPIC experience who want to test out of orientation training.

Health and Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 12 months of start.
  • Fit mask test within 12 months of start; must be updated annually.
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray documentation.
  • Annual TB questionnaire.
  • Immunizations or proof of immunity for Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B.
  • 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start.
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season.
  • COVID vaccine series preferred.
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccination highly preferred for certain specialties.

Facility-Specific Training and Documents (must be completed)

  • Stroke Education (except Pediatric specialties and NICU).
  • CLABSI Prevention for Adult and Pediatric Training.
  • Preventing Pressure Injury Training.
  • Language Services Training.
  • CAUTI Education Training (except PICU, NICU, Psychiatry/Behavioral Health).
  • Patient Transportation with Oxygen Education.
  • Suicide Risk and Environmental Assessment Training.
  • Pyxis ES MedStation Modules.
  • Baxter Pump Interoperability Training.
  • Patient Bedside Rounding (except OR, Behavioral Health, Ambulatory, ER/ED).
  • Ventricular Assist Device Awareness.
  • AME Blood Administration Module (except Case Managers, Behavioral Health/Psych, Home Health).
  • New Employee Orientation Module.
  • 21st Century Cures Act Module (required for RN except Home Health).
  • ED Handbook (for ED/ER RNs only).
  • eCart Training Module (not required for Pediatric, Periop/OR, Outpatient, Case Managers, Home Health).
  • Chaperone Policy Training (required if gap of 6+ months between assignments or module updated).

Additional Notes

  • Must provide a 7-year work history with no gaps greater than 90 days.
  • Employment verification required for the last 7 years.
  • Attestation of prior radiation exposure required if applicable.
  • Mobile Heartbeat Alarm Module required for all RNs except ER/ED, Pediatrics, ICU, and NICU.
  • Candidates must be prepared to complete all required training modules and attestations, often via electronic signature.

This position offers an opportunity to work in a high-acuity acute care setting with a focus on oncology nursing and chemotherapy administration. Candidates should be prepared for a rigorous credentialing and compliance process.
