Job Opportunity: Oncology Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: Saint Louis, Missouri
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- Work in Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Oncology
- Oncology and chemotherapy experience required
- Must pass Relias EKG exam; interpretation and management of dysrhythmias required
- Floating required throughout the Oncology department as needed; may be assigned to different units based on need
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 4:1 for all shifts
- Average daily census: 30 patients
- Beds/rooms: 32
- Every other weekend required
- Responsibilities include:
- Auto stem cell transplants
- Chemotherapy administration
- Accessing/managing ports
- Administration of blood and blood products
- Central line blood draws and care (including PICC lines)
- Starting and maintaining IVs
- Administering antibiotics and antiemetics
- Foley catheter insertion and management
- Isolation precautions
- Telemetry interpretation and monitoring
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Missouri
- Minimum 1 year of oncology nursing experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Chemotherapy certification
- Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) or Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC) certification
- Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
- Experience with administration of chemotherapy
- Ability to interpret and manage telemetry monitoring
- Experience accessing and managing ports
- Central line and implanted line care, including PICC line care
Certifications & Competencies
- Chemotherapy certification
- ACLS and BLS (AHA only)
- Oncology competency exam (unit-specific, annual update required)
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (annual)
- Other certifications may be required depending on unit assignment (e.g., PALS, NRP, TNCC)
Schedule & Work Environment
- Floating across Oncology units as needed
- Every other weekend required
- Short-term acute care setting
- Magnet and teaching hospital with Level I trauma center designation
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Government-issued ID (e.g., driver’s license or state ID)
- Criminal background check within 6 months of start, including statewide and nationwide searches
- Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
- Education verification of highest nursing degree
- Professional license primary source verification (NURSYS for Missouri)
- Drug testing within 1 year of start, must remain valid throughout assignment
- Physical exam within 1 year of start
- Fit mask testing (N95 respirators) with annual renewal
- Immunizations and health screenings including:
- Tdap vaccine or declination (no exemption for Bone Marrow Transplant Unit)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within required timeframes
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella immunity or vaccination/declination as applicable
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption during flu season
- Facility-specific documents including HIPAA acknowledgement, confidentiality form, hand hygiene policy, dress code policy, and orientation modules (approx. 16 hours) completed prior to start
- Skills checklist specific to Oncology/Infusion Center required within 1 year of start
References & History
- Two professional references required (supervisors preferred)
- Employment application and performance evaluations may be required
