Registered Nurse – Step Down Unit (Travel/Contract)

Location: Saint Joseph, Missouri
Shift: Nights, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Facility Overview

• 352 certified beds
• Level II Trauma Center and Level II Stroke Center
• Offers urgent, primary, specialty, and emergency care through hospital and area clinics
• Only tertiary hospital between Kansas City and Omaha
• Charting system: EPIC
• Free parking

Required Qualifications

• License: Valid RN State License or Compact State Licensure (pending license acceptable if obtained prior to start)
• Experience: Minimum 1 year of RN experience required
• Education: BSN preferred
• Certifications:

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) – AHA or ARC (must state "Basic Life Support")
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – AHA only (RQI acceptable)
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) – Required prior to start for Emergency Department RNs; ICU RNs require if assignment extends beyond 1 year
  • NIH Stroke Certification – Required annually for Acute Hospital RNs in specified units including Stepdown and ICU
• Testing:

  • Basic Dysrhythmia (EKG) exam required for acute hospital RNs; must score 84% or higher with up to 2 attempts (ICU has a one-attempt policy)
  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exams as applicable
• Other:

  • Primary source verification of certifications and licenses required within 30 days of start
  • NURSYS verification required

Health and Safety Requirements

• Physical exam within last 12 months (not required annually)
• Fit testing completed onsite at orientation
• Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year; additional requirements if TB positive
• Immunizations or documented immunity required for:

  • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella (2 MMR vaccines, positive titer, or declination)
  • Hepatitis B (vaccination series, titer, or declination)
  • Varicella (2 vaccines, positive titer, or declination)
• Drug screen within 30 days of start (not required annually) covering multiple substances
• Seasonal flu vaccination required during flu season or agency-approved medical/religious exemption (mask required if exempt)

Documentation and Compliance

• Background checks including national criminal, state, county, sex offender, and federal exclusion lists within 30 days of start
• Education verification with official transcript or diploma including graduation date
• Missouri EDL Search required within 30 days of start
• Employment application and verification of most recent employer required
• Two professional references within 3 years of start
• Skills checklist required
• Facility-specific documents to review and sign, including confidentiality agreement and code of conduct
• Completion of agency nurse orientation quiz with minimum 84% score prior to start

Additional Information

• Locals accepted at a reduced rate within a 50-mile radius
• Onsite AVADE training required for RN candidates in certain units if extending past initial contract (includes online pre-work and in-person skills validation)
• Basic Dysrhythmia exam remediation process available for non-ICU candidates after first failed attempt

This position offers a night shift travel contract opportunity in a Level II Trauma and Stroke Center with a focus on step down care. Candidates must meet comprehensive licensure, certification, health, and compliance requirements to ensure readiness for this acute care environment.
