Registered Nurse - NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit)
Location: Charlotte, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
- Work in a Level 3 or 4 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) caring for infants including premature babies (as early as 22 weeks gestation) and surgical infants.
- Patient care includes managing diagnoses such as hypoxic injury and performing special procedures like therapeutic hypothermia, nitric oxide therapy, and care involving UAC/UVC lines, Broviac catheters, tracheostomies, gastrostomy tubes, and ostomies.
- Utilize advanced equipment including Tecotherm, BCPAP, Ram NC, Alaris IV pumps, Med Fusion feeding pumps, Servo ventilators, HFOV, Baby Leo, and Giraffe incubators.
- Unit systems include Pyxis medication dispensing, EPIC electronic health records, SBAR communication, and 4P staffing model.
Schedule & Work Details
- Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts of 12 hours each per week (18:45 - 07:15), totaling 36 hours per week.
- Patient-to-nurse ratios range from 1:2 to 1:4.
- No call requirement.
- Float requirement includes Pediatrics, PICU, and nursery units caring for infants up to 12 months.
- Weekend requirement: 3 Fridays, 3 Saturdays, and 3 Sundays within a 6-week period.
- Self-scheduling based on unit needs.
- Unit orientation: 24 hours.
- Scrubs: Navy blue or white.
- Return to Office (RTO) after booking is not allowed and cannot be worked out onsite; excessive call-offs or RTO may result in cancellation or denial of rehire.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in North Carolina
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), with NICU experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
Patient Population & Procedures
- Care for premature infants (as early as 22 weeks gestation).
- Manage surgical infants and infants with hypoxic injury.
- Perform specialized procedures including:
- Therapeutic hypothermia
- Nitric oxide therapy
- Umbilical arterial and venous catheters (UAC/UVC)
- Peripherally inserted central lines (PCLs)
- Broviac catheters
- Tracheostomies
- Gastrostomy tubes (GTT)
- Ostomies
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Background checks including local, federal, national criminal databases, DOJ sex offender search, and education verification for highest degree relevant to nursing.
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start.
- Physical exam within 1 year of start; if past positive TB, physical within 30 days and annual updates required.
- Fit testing for N95 mask or completion of PAPR training (not required for non-clinical).
- Immunizations and titers required:
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Titer or 2 vaccines; boosters required if negative/equivocal. Declinations not accepted.
- Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccination series, or facility-specific declination form if titer negative/equivocal.
- Seasonal flu vaccine or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1 - 10/31).
- TB testing: PPD, Qgold, or Tspot within 1 year; if positive, chest x-ray within 5 years and annual physician-signed TB questionnaire required.
- Annual compliance training and facility-specific education modules required.
- Employment application and professional references required per agency standards.
Additional Notes
- Candidates must submit a passport-style photo on a solid white background for badge creation.
- Orientation and onboarding include completion of confidentiality agreements, hospital policies acknowledgment, medication safety training, and other facility-specific documents.
- Candidates must complete competency exams and medication/pharmacology tests as applicable.
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 72 hours of start with a minimum passing score of 82%.
- Flu exemption requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis; approved exemptions require mask-wearing on campus.
- Candidates must complete the facility’s Corp ID and I-Learn account setup prior to start.
