Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Bloomington, Indiana

Job Details

  • Shift: 3x12-hour shifts or 4x12-hour shifts
  • Years of Experience Required: 2 years
  • First Time Travelers: Not accepted
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not explicitly required
  • Charge Nurse Responsibilities: May be required depending on operational needs; training and resources provided. Candidates must be comfortable with this possibility.
  • Local Candidates: Not accepted
  • License Requirements: Indiana RN license, compact license, or temporary license must be in hand at the time of start. Pending licenses accepted if valid at start.
  • Holiday Work: Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays.
  • Restrictions:
    • Effective 11/30/2024, Indiana RNs are generally not allowed to work at these facilities except for Perioperative/OR RNs, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers (including ENDO, IR RN, PACU, Cath Lab RN, SDS). These exceptions can work past the deadline.

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only, RQI acceptable
  • NIH Stroke Certification
  • Other certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., ACLS, PALS, NRP, CHEMO, TNCC, EFM) – verify per unit requirements

Required Background Checks & Verifications

  • Background check within 90 days of start, including:
    • 7 years residence/work history
    • SSN Trace
    • County, Statewide, National Sex Offender checks
    • FACIS Level III
    • Education verification (new travelers only)
    • International search if lived/worked outside US in last 7 years
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM check within 30 days of start
  • HHS/OIG check within 30 days of start
  • Transcript/Diploma (official copies required; may be pending at start)
  • Education verification by 3rd party (may be pending at start)

Competency Requirements

  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam (not required for Techs or RRTs)
  • Color Blind Testing (Ishihara exam or equivalent, minimum 100% score)
  • Unit Competency Exam

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 12 months of start
  • Fit mask test within 12 months (approved respirators only)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year of start
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (strongly recommended)
  • Rubeola (Measles): Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
  • Mumps: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
  • Rubella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
  • Hepatitis B: Series, titer, or signed declination required
  • Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
  • Drug Testing: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months
  • Seasonal Flu Vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required for 2025-26 flu season (no declinations accepted)
  • TB Questionnaire updated annually
  • Color Blind Exam (Ishihara or equivalent)

Documentation & Compliance

  • Valid Driver’s License or Passport (clear copy)
  • References: Minimum 2 from recent employment within 2 years, must be from charge, manager, supervisor, or above
  • Employment application current with full work history and explanations for gaps over 30 days
  • Skills checklist within 12 months, updated annually
  • Facility-specific forms and compliance checklists must be completed as a priority prior to start

Additional Notes

  • HIPAA Acknowledgement required
  • Online verification of state license including expiration and disciplinary actions within 30 days before start
  • On-site fit testing available only as a last resort with limitations
  • Some certifications and requirements may vary by unit; verify with the appropriate department before assignment

This position is suitable for experienced Registered Nurses with at least 2 years of clinical experience, who hold the required certifications and licenses, and are comfortable with potential charge nurse duties and holiday shifts. First-time travel nurses and local candidates are not accepted.
