Job Summary
Seeking an experienced Registered Nurse for a Med/Surg Telemetry unit specializing in neurological care, including stroke and neurosurgery patients. The unit includes a 4-bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) and cares for patients with various neuro diagnoses such as epilepsy and subdural hematomas.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in North Carolina
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Minimum 2 years of Med Surg / Telemetry nursing experience, with experience within the last year
- Neurology experience
- Completion of 2 or more travel assignments
- BLS issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- IV start skills
- Telemetry skills
- Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
Unit Details
- Patient Population: Primarily stroke and neurosurgery patients, including epilepsy and traumatic/non-traumatic subdural hematomas
- Census: Approximately 42 patients daily, 43 beds/rooms
- Systems: PYXIS, EPIC, SBAR
- Orientation: 36 hours
- Scrubs: Navy color required
Scheduling & Attendance
- Preferred scheduling type
- No Return to Office (RTO) after booking allowed; call-offs or additional RTO may lead to contract cancellation
- If weekend shifts are missed, they must be made up either the same week or at the end of the contract
- Floating to other units may be frequent
Required Compliance & Documentation
- Background checks within 6 months
- Drug screening within 6 months (9-panel acceptable)
- Immunizations and health documents including:
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year (or proof of past positive with documentation)
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (per standard healthcare requirements)
- Flu vaccination or approved exemption during flu season
- Physical exam (per travel agency standards)
- Medication safety training and other facility-specific mandatory education
- Photo for badge (passport style, navy scrubs, business appropriate attire)
- Completion of Non-Novant Health Worker Orientation (approx. 8-10 hours for acute care)
- Competency exams including medication and dysrhythmia/EKG testing
Additional Notes
- Block scheduling is not guaranteed
- Floating may include COVID care units
- Must be able to work 36 or 48 hours per week
- Must be willing to work every other weekend
- Must complete all required certifications and competencies prior to start
- Navy scrubs required for the assignment
This position is ideal for experienced Med/Surg Telemetry RNs with neurological experience who have prior travel contract experience and are comfortable with floating and working in a fast-paced neuro-focused unit.
