Travel Registered Nurse (Medical Surgical)

Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Overview

• Work 12-hour night shifts (18:45 - 07:15)
• Target nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:6-7
• Charge nurse role required for night travelers
• Floating to similar units and alternate care locations with inpatient holding
• Assigned to every other weekend and must work holidays
• May care for COVID-19 patients
• Assigned to Inclement Weather Team and Storm/Hurricane Team; may be required to report during catastrophic events or disasters
• Patient population: Adults and geriatrics, general medical/surgical patients
• Daily census approximately 43 patients

Required Skills & Experience

• Minimum 2 years of Registered Nurse experience (highest requirement)
• EPIC experience required
• Must be able to manage insulin and heparin drips
• BCLS certification required
• Charge nurse experience preferred
• CPI certification preferred
• First-time travelers accepted (prior travel experience NOT required)

Unit & Clinical Details

• Procedures: Insulin drips, heparin drips, wound vac dressing changes, high flow oxygen
• Occasional limited short-term BiPAP respiratory support (no additional training needed)
• No PCU level patients on this unit
• Documentation and medication systems: PYXIS, EPIC, SBAR
• Unit orientation: 24 hours
• Scrubs: Navy (not provided)

Scheduling & Requirements

• Contract length accepted: 13-26 weeks
• Shift hours: 12-hour nights
• Call required if scheduled on call
• Maximum 7 days RTO (return to office) allowed after booking; no RTO worked onsite
• Must pass EKG competency testing prior to start
• Must be able to work holidays and weekends as assigned

Required Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse license for North Carolina
• BCLS certification
• EPIC experience
• Must pass Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (minimum 82% score, with remediation process if needed)
• Background check within 6 months
• Drug screening within 6 months (9-panel acceptable)
• Immunizations and health requirements including:

  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
  • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (per standard healthcare requirements)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption during flu season
• Completion of facility-specific orientation and compliance training (including medication safety, confidentiality, and hospital policies)
• Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Orientation (approx. 8-10 hours for acute candidates)
• Physical exam and references required per Aya Healthcare standards

Additional Notes

• Must be able to work in a fast-paced, general medical-surgical environment with adult and geriatric patients
• May be assigned to disaster response teams during storms or mass casualty events
• Floating to similar units is expected
• Must be able to work holidays and weekends as scheduled
• Navy scrubs required but not provided

This position is ideal for experienced Medical Surgical RNs comfortable with night shifts, charge nurse responsibilities, and working in a dynamic hospital environment with potential exposure to COVID-19 patients. Prior travel experience is not required.
