ER Nurse Travel Opportunity - Bakersfield, California
Position Overview
- Seeking an experienced ER nurse for a travel contract in California.
- Must have at least 3 full years of ER nursing experience.
- Candidates must have prior travel nursing experience; no first-time travelers or travel teams (including duos) accepted.
- Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, NIHSS, and a valid California nursing license.
- Must be willing and able to float to the Pediatric ER as needed.
Patient Population & Environment
- Adult ER: 18 beds + 10 reclining chairs for moderate care.
- Pediatric ER: 5 beds + 5 reclining chairs.
- Approximately 325 ER visits per day combined (about 50% pediatric patients).
- Facility is a receiving center for STEMI, stroke (CVA), burns, and pediatric emergencies.
- Patient cases range from minor walk-ins to critically ill patients, including respiratory failure, asthma, abdominal pain, fractures, substance abuse, stroke alerts, and occasional psychiatric holds.
Experience & Skills Required
- Minimum 3 years ER experience.
- Experience with both adult and pediatric ER patients (significant pediatric ER experience required, not just general nursing).
- Basic EKG interpretation required; critical care nurses will have additional testing during orientation.
- Pediatric ER preferred certifications: ENPC or CPEN.
- Adult ER requires BLS, ACLS, PALS, NIHSS.
- ICU-level acuity with nurse-to-patient ratios: ICU 1:2, Pediatric ER 1:4, Adult ER 1:4, Procedural Sedation 1:1.
Work Schedule & Environment
- Night shifts.
- Every other weekend required.
- Work 2 out of every 3 holidays.
- No block scheduling; flexibility with scheduling is necessary.
- Three shifts on the unit plus meetings with ER educator for required education.
- Team-oriented, traveler-friendly environment with emphasis on respect for all team members including EMS.
- Uniform colors: Navy blue for RNs, cranberry for LVNs.
Additional Information
- Use of ER techs or CNAs; LVNs run the fast track area.
- Pediatric ER is staffed by a designated pediatric doctor from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
- Facility uses Phillips monitors with monitor tech support.
- Fast track is run by midlevel providers.
- Burn nurse available for assessments in the adult ER.

- 13 weeks (approximately 3 months).
