Job Title

• Registered Nurse (RN) – Emergency Room (ER)

Job Description / Work Environment

• Trauma Level IV, Acute Stroke Ready Hospital
• ER Setup: 2 ER rooms with 1 overflow room
• No Fast Track or separate holding area in ER
• No separate Psych/seclusion rooms
• Security: No in-house 24/7 security; 911 for sheriff
• Average patients treated per day: 4-5
• Nurse to patient ratio: 1 nurse per 2 patients (charge nurse responsible for ER patients)
• Common patient types: Acute illnesses, lacerations, orthopedic injuries, trauma, cardiac cases (STEMI patients shipped out)
• Common drips administered: Heparin, Cardizem, Nitro
• ED Physician/Mid-level coverage: MDs and Residents with 15-minute response time after leaving
• Support staff: CNAs from med/surg available; EMS staff may assist on request
• Respiratory Therapy: No RT 24/7; RNs perform ABGs, breathing treatments, EKGs, and RT equipment setup (CRNA assists with vents)
• Monitor Techs: None; RNs read tele strips and monitor Mindray monitors
• Radiology: On-call after hours for X-ray and CT; transport may require RN assistance
• Phlebotomy: Labs drawn by phlebotomy, not usually by RNs

Scheduling

• Shift length: 12-hour shifts (7am-7pm and 7pm-7am), rotating day/night
• Hours per week: 36 hours
• Scheduling: Self-scheduling with manager balancing; block scheduling considered case-by-case
• Weekend requirements: Every other weekend or possibly every third weekend
• Holiday requirements: Every other holiday
• Call/standby: Low census on-call for extra shifts
• Floating: May float to Medical-Surgical units as needed

Orientation

• Unit-specific orientation: 1 day and 1 night shift on the unit

Required Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
• NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
• TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) preferred

Required Experience

• ER nursing experience in similar settings
• Specialty years of experience: Not explicitly stated; assume minimum 1+ years ER experience based on description
