Job Summary
Provide safe, competent, quality nursing care to oncology patients based on nursing theory, research, and evidence-based practice within a cancer center setting.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care
- Deliver patient care using Relationship Centered Care and nursing process principles.
- Assess and evaluate patient needs; apply critical thinking in care management.
- Integrate assessment and intervention skills in nursing care delivery.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare team to develop, implement, and evaluate care plans.
- Prioritize patient care including teaching, rounding, coaching, discharge planning, and delegation.
- Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, transitions, health promotion, and disease prevention.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
- Manage assignments within Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model.
Patient Experience
- Role model Relationship Centered Care practices such as Admission Welcome, Bedside Shift Report, Purposeful Hourly Rounding, Medication Review, and Discharge Wrap Up.
- Respect patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, and expressed needs.
- Establish and maintain therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
- Use evidence-based practices to understand patient perceptions of care.
- Initiate service recovery and escalate patient/family concerns appropriately.
- Demonstrate caring, respect, compassion, empathy, and active listening.
Quality and Safety
- Practice safe, patient-centered care and identify barriers or opportunities for improvement.
- Demonstrate clinical skills essential to quality and safety in oncology nursing.
- Implement process improvement strategies and participate in peer/institutional reviews.
- Collaborate on quality improvement projects, evidence-based practice activities, and nursing research.
- Follow high reliability principles to avoid high-risk behaviors and ensure patient safety.
- Escalate safety hazards or gaps according to institutional protocols.
- Document nursing practice accurately to support quality and performance improvement.
Operations
- Perform charge nurse duties as assigned.
- Coordinate with leadership to ensure adequate supplies and inventory for patient care.
- Escalate material or staffing shortages appropriately.
- Practice cost-effective patient care resource management.
- Document thoroughly in compliance with hospital, regulatory, and legal standards.
- Facilitate patient throughput during shifts.
Professional Development
- Support clinical colleagues, patients, families, and healthcare team members.
- Advance clinical competence from novice to expert level.
- Maintain a professional image and communicate with caring, respect, compassion, and empathy.
- Incorporate ethical principles in decision-making.
- Promote lifelong learning, scholarship, inquiry, and innovation.
- Acquire knowledge and skills relevant to role, patient population, and specialty.
- Participate in shared decision-making through specialty councils, committees, and unit initiatives.
Qualifications & Skills
- Current NYS Registered Nurse (RN) License
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Minimum 2 years RN experience, including medicine and chemotherapy experience
- 1 year travel nursing experience preferred for travel positions (not required for per diem)
- EPIC electronic health record experience highly preferred
Unit Information
- Average Unit Census: 35 patients
- Unit Size: 36 beds
- Typical Schedule: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (3x12)
