Job Summary

The Registered Nurse (RN) in the ICU is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care. The role involves using technology, therapeutic interventions, evidence-based practice, and coordinating care with the healthcare team.


Essential Job Duties

  • Assess:

    • Perform comprehensive assessments of physical, social, and psychological status, including cognitive and communicative abilities.
    • Gather and evaluate information from interdisciplinary team members, patients, and families.
  • Plan:

    • Develop individualized care plans using assessment data and critical thinking.
    • Engage patients, families, and healthcare team members in care planning and education.
    • Prepare patients for ongoing support needs after the current care episode.
  • Implement:

    • Direct and coordinate the interdisciplinary care team through delegation and collaboration.
    • Provide or delegate care consistent with the plan and professional standards.
    • Manage time, supplies, and resources effectively to prioritize patient care.
  • Evaluate:

    • Monitor patient responses to interventions and clinical outcomes.
    • Adjust care plans as needed based on evaluations and reassessments.
  • Professionalism:

    • Promote the nursing profession and support the development of others.
    • Adhere to legal, ethical, and regulatory standards, including accurate documentation and scope of practice.

  • Basic computer proficiency.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to see and read information, labels, and patient needs.
  • Frequent verbal communication and auditory comprehension, especially in emergencies.
  • Manual dexterity for handling complex and delicate equipment.
  • Ability to lift and transfer patients, bend, carry supplies, and push/pull equipment, including heavy items.
  • Ability to walk and assist with patient transport and equipment distribution in busy environments.
  • May need to stand for extended periods.
