Registered Nurse (RN) - Cardiac Surgical ICU (CSICU) - Contract

Location: New York, NY
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM (11 hours per day, approximately 34.5 hours per week)


Job Summary

Provide safe, competent, and quality nursing care to patients in the Cardiac Surgical Intensive Care Unit (CSICU) using evidence-based practice and nursing theory. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care. Support patient and family education, promote health, and ensure smooth transitions of care.


Key Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Deliver nursing care based on professional practice models and nursing process.
  • Assess and evaluate patient needs using critical thinking.
  • Integrate assessment and intervention skills in care delivery.
  • Collaborate with healthcare team to develop and evaluate care plans.
  • Prioritize patient care including teaching, rounding, coaching, and discharge planning.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, health promotion, and disease prevention.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and care team members.
  • Manage assignments within a Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model.

Patient Experience

  • Facilitate patient-centered care practices such as Admission Welcome, Bedside Shift Report, Purposeful Hourly Rounding, and Discharge Wrap Up.
  • Respect patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, and expressed needs.
  • Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
  • Use evidence-based practices to understand patient perceptions of care.
  • Initiate service recovery and escalate concerns appropriately.
  • Demonstrate caring, respect, compassion, empathy, and active listening.

Quality and Safety

  • Practice safe, efficient, patient-centered care and identify barriers to improvement.
  • Demonstrate clinical skills essential to quality and safety in cardiac surgical patients.
  • Participate in process improvement, peer review, and quality initiatives.
  • Collaborate on quality improvement projects and nursing research.
  • Follow high reliability principles to avoid high-risk behaviors.
  • Escalate safety hazards following institutional protocols.
  • Document nursing practice accurately to support quality and performance improvement.

Operations

  • Perform charge nurse duties as assigned.
  • Coordinate supply utilization and inventory management with leadership.
  • Escalate material or staffing shortages appropriately.
  • Apply cost-effective approaches to patient care resources.
  • Facilitate patient throughput during shifts.
  • Maintain accurate documentation in compliance with regulatory and legal standards.

  • Support clinical colleagues, patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Advance clinical competence from novice to expert level.
  • Project a professional image demonstrating caring, respect, compassion, and empathy.
  • Incorporate ethical principles in decision-making.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York State.
  • Minimum 2 years of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) experience, including within the last year.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
