PCU RN - Night Shift

Location: Kearney, Nebraska
Contract Length: 20 weeks

Job Details

• Shift: 12-hour night shifts (1830-0630)
• Hours Guaranteed: 36 hours per week
• Unit: Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
• Beds: 40 beds (average daily census 24)
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4-5 (both days and nights)
• Orientation: 1 day unit/department specific orientation
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
• Holiday Requirement: Minimum of 2 holidays during contract
• Floating: Required to float to MedSurg or ICU for PCU acuity patients

Required Experience & Certifications

• Specialty Experience: Minimum 2 years of unit experience in PCU or similar setting
• Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS required
• Competencies:

  • Competent in Arterial Lines
  • Ability to titrate drips (Heparin, Nitro, Dopamine, Cardizem, Amiodarone, insulin)
  • Must read and interpret telemetry strips independently
  • Experience with high flow respiratory equipment troubleshooting

Patient Population & Care Focus

• Adult patients with cardiac med/surg, dialysis, cancer, vascular issues, sepsis, respiratory conditions, stroke, post stent, post pacer placement, renal failure
• Diverse cultural populations primarily Hispanic and Somalian
• Focus on patient experience, responsiveness, communication about medications, and hospital environment

Additional Requirements & Notes

• Fingernail Policy: Artificial nails prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply results in contract termination
• Driver’s License: Required at submission to verify candidate location within 50-mile radius
• Exam: Pass/fail open book exam during orientation; 90% required to pass
• Dress Code: Navy blue scrubs
• Support Staff: Nurse aides/patient care techs present (ratio 1:12), charge nurse on each shift who also takes assignments
• Equipment: Overhead lifts in half the rooms, portable lifts, vein finders, bladder scanner available
• Team Attributes: Successful nurses are team players, flexible, adaptable, and have strong communication skills
• Return to Office (RTO): Required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO approved
