ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: San Francisco, California
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 25 weeks


Job Overview

  • Float pool position: ICU RNs will float across multiple units including TCUs, ICUs, Emergency Department (ED), and Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU).
  • Rotating 12-hour shifts (day and night) on a 4-week schedule cycle; shift may change each cycle based on need.
  • Must be able to float to other facilities and departments within the system.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in California
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • Minimum 2 years of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience, with ICU experience within the last year
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification

Shift Details

  • 12-hour shifts, either day (7:00 AM – 7:30 PM) or night (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM).
  • Typically 3 shifts per week (36 hours/week).
  • Rotating schedule every 4 weeks between day and night shifts.

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Two supervisory references required, preferably from the most recent employment.
  • Current and updated resume covering the last 7 years; gaps of 30+ days must be explained.
  • Unit-specific skills checklist updated annually.
  • Verification of 7 years of work history required (third-party or in-house).
  • Completed references must be submitted at time of application.

Background Checks & Verifications

  • 7-year criminal background check including specific counties and nationwide databases, updated annually.
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start.
  • Education verification or copy of diploma/transcript.
  • Sex offender search as required.
  • Primary source verification of RN license within 30 days of start.
  • NURSYS verification for RN license within 30 days of start.

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, including physician statement of fitness to work.
  • Fit mask test within 1 year of start (specific approved masks required). Onsite fit testing available as last resort.
  • Immunizations and titers required:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years; no declinations accepted except medical exemptions)
    • Two negative TB tests (PPD, QuantiFERON, or T-Spot) with specific timing requirements. Annual TB questionnaire required.
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: IGG titer or 2 vaccines required.
    • Hepatitis B: Titer, series, or declination (declination must be signed within 1 year).
    • Varicella: IGG titer or 2 vaccines required (history of disease not accepted).
  • Drug testing: Standard 9-panel (excluding THC) within 30 days of start, re-run every 2 years.
  • Seasonal flu vaccine or facility-specific declination required during flu season (Nov-April).
  • COVID-19 vaccination is strongly recommended but not required as of current policy.

Competency & Training Requirements

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam with a passing score of 80% or higher, completed within 1 year prior to start.
  • Unit-specific competency exam with a passing score of 80% or higher, completed within 12 months prior to start.
  • Core training parts I, II, and III with passing scores of 80% or higher, completed within 1 year prior to start and updated annually.
  • Pass/fail Telemetry exam on first day of orientation for applicable units; two attempts allowed, third requires manager approval.
  • UCSF-specific learning modules must be completed prior to or on Day 1 depending on start day.

Additional Important Information

  • Return to Offer (RTO) must be submitted at time of offer; late submissions will not be considered.
  • References must be completed and in hand at time of submission.
  • Candidates must be prepared to float across multiple units and facilities.
  • Pass/fail testing includes EKG and medication knowledge relevant to telemetry and ICU settings.
  • Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) and Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) may be required depending on unit assignment.
  • Candidates must complete facility-specific COVID-19 questionnaires and comply with all health screening protocols prior to start.

This position requires a highly flexible ICU RN with strong critical care skills and the ability to adapt to multiple units and rotating shifts within a large healthcare system.
