Registered Nurse (MS/Tele) - Travel/Contract
Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Shift: Night (18:45 - 07:15), 3 shifts per week, 36 hours/week
Patient Ratio: 1:6
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
Call Requirement: None
Float Requirement: Yes, may float to main campus (~32 minutes away)
Job Description
- Immediate start required: must start on 6/8 or 6/15
- Unit accepts first-time travelers
- Night shift on a Med/Surg Telemetry unit with a focus on cardiac monitoring and dysrhythmia management
- Expected to work holidays; no block schedules except weekend blocks
- Contract staff may be assigned to Storm/Hurricane Teams and may be required to work during catastrophic events or disasters
- 24-hour unit orientation provided
- Scrubs: Navy blue or white
Patient Diagnoses
Includes but not limited to:
- Diabetes, dementia, COVID, pneumonia, COPD, sepsis, encephalopathy
- GI bleed, anemia, hip fracture, CHF, UTI, renal failure, hypertension, cellulitis
- Various surgical recovery cases, failure to thrive
Required Skills & Experience
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience (highest requirement)
- No prior travel experience required
- Skills include:
- Med/Surg and Med/Surg Telemetry care
- Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
- Telemetry remote monitoring
- Use of Rapid Response/Code teams
- Bowel obstruction care
- Colostomy/ileostomy management
- Feeding tube care
- Pre/Post hemodialysis management
- Renal failure care
- Blood product administration
- Central line blood draws, peripheral line care, phlebotomy, PICC line management
- IV therapy including starting/maintaining IVs, heparin, insulin, PCA
- Chest tubes (Emerson/PleurEvac)
- BiPAP/CPAP and High Flow Nasal Cannula management
- Non-invasive airway management, oral suctioning, oxygen administration
- Isolation precautions and PPE use
- Wound care including Wound Vac
Preferred Skills & Certifications
- ACLS certification
- Telemetry unit monitoring experience
- Post angiogram, post cardiac surgery, post MI care
- IV insulin protocols
- Bariatric surgery care
- Continuous bladder irrigation (CBI)
- Port access/management
- Stroke (CVA) care
- Substance withdrawal management
- Surgical drains care
- Interpretation of arterial blood gases (ABGs)
- Pre/Post thoracic surgery care
- Tracheostomy care/management
- Previous charge nurse experience
- Electronic documentation proficiency
- Community hospital experience
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
Licensing
- Must hold an active RN license valid in North Carolina
Testing & Competency Requirements
- Must pass Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam with a minimum score of 82% (3 attempts allowed) within 72 hours of start
- Must pass EKG testing prior to start
- Color blindness test required within 1 year
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam required for new contracts
- Other competency exams as applicable
Health & Immunization Requirements
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year (or proof of past positive with appropriate documentation)
- Measles (Rubeola) immunity by titer or vaccination
- Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella immunity per standard requirements
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption (mask required if exempt)
- Drug screening within 6 months of start (9-panel acceptable)
- Physical exam documentation as per travel agency standards
Scheduling & Work Conditions
- Self-scheduling
- No call required
- May be required to float to other units or campuses
- Expected to work holidays
- Must be able to work every other weekend
- Storm/Hurricane team participation may be required
Orientation & Onboarding
- 24-hour unit orientation
- Photo for badge required immediately after signing contract (passport style, solid white background, business attire)
- Must complete facility-specific education modules including medication safety and confidentiality agreements
- Must complete annual compliance and facility-specific mandatory education as required
- Must complete password setup and login to facility learning system (I-Learn) within 24 hours of receiving credentials
Additional Notes
- Maximum 7 days return to office (RTO) per contract
- No block schedules except weekend blocks
- Must be able to work holidays
- Facility uses Pyxis medication system
- Contract staff may be reassigned mid-contract based on facility needs
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid RN license in North Carolina
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum 2 years of Med Surg / Telemetry nursing experience
- Med Surg / Telemetry experience within the last year
- BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
