Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical/Telemetry

Job Description

• Option for 36 or 48-hour shifts and 13 or 26-week contract lengths.
• Frequent floating required to meet staffing needs; may float to multiple units including medical surgical, telemetry, orthopedic, neuro, trauma, observation, and behavioral health units.
• Patient population includes total knee and hip replacements, complicated orthopedic cases, pulmonary, sepsis, GI, endocrine, cardiac, renal, and psychiatric illnesses.
• Behavioral health patients on some floors; training provided for safety and de-escalation.
• Nurse-to-patient ratios: 1:5 on days, 1:6 on nights (rarely 1:7 nights).
• Drip medication administration required on all floors.
• EPIC electronic charting experience required.
• No first-time travelers accepted unless with 2 years of experience at a Level I Academic Medical Center.
• 100% nicotine-free facility.
• Weekend shifts: 4 out of 8 possible in a 4-week period.
• Holiday work requirement: must work 2 out of 3 major holidays.
• Locals not accepted (must live more than 100 miles away).
• Pending license accepted but must be in hand before start; bookings made six weeks out if not.

Required Qualifications

• Registered Nurse license valid in Nebraska.
• Minimum 2 years of RN experience in a large, urban hospital setting.
• BLS certification required.
• ACLS and CPI certifications preferred.
• Experience with drips and telemetry patients.
• EPIC charting experience required.
• Comfortable caring for behavioral health patients.
• Prior travel experience: First-time travelers generally not accepted unless meeting specific experience criteria.

Work Environment & Additional Information

• Scrubs: Steele gray scrubs required (facility-branded scrubs provided after confirmation).
• Parking: Monthly permits available (~$55/month) or daily parking rates.
• Floating may include multiple units and campuses within the hospital system.
• Care teams include CNAs, care techs, transport team, paramedics, and sometimes LPNs.
• RTO (Request Time Off) restrictions: up to two weeks allowed; must be submitted with application.
• Safety training and orientation required.
• Facility is a teaching hospital with a complex patient population.

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

• Government-issued photo ID required.
• Background check within 30 days of start, including criminal and education verification.
• Ongoing federal and state screening (SAM, OIG) required.
• State license verification and primary source verification required.
• Health documents required: physical exam, fit test, immunizations (Tdap, MMR, Hep B, Varicella), TB testing, drug screening, flu vaccination documentation preferred.
• Annual skills checklist and competency exams required.
• References: 2 work references from the past 2 years required.
• COVID vaccine preferred; exemptions accepted.
• Additional state-specific registry checks required.

Shift Details

This position is ideal for experienced travel RNs comfortable with medical surgical and telemetry patients, including those with behavioral health needs, who are flexible with floating and working in a fast-paced, urban hospital environment.
