Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: Kalamazoo, Michigan
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Description
- GMU is a step-down unit caring for general medical and oncology step-down patients.
- Nurse to patient ratio: 1:4-6 (ratios may flex higher with support staff; charge RN typically not assigned patients).
- Chemotherapy admissions decrease assignment ratios.
- Floating to other med-surg areas including AU and ER to care for med-surg patients.
- Scheduling: Weekends assigned by manager/scheduler; other days self-scheduled. Must be available first two weeks of assignment.
- Weekend work: Every other weekend.
- Block scheduling may be accommodated upon request.
Required Experience & Skills
- Minimum 2 years of PCU/Stepdown nursing experience.
- Skills: Administering chemotherapy via IV, starting IVs.
- Experience with equipment: Welch Allyn Vital Sign Towers, Sigma IV Pumps.
- Documentation system: EPIC.
Licenses & Certifications Required
- Michigan RN License.
- BLS (AHA).
- NIH Stroke Certification.
- ONCC or ONS certification MUST BE IN HAND (one or the other accepted).
Additional Certifications (as applicable)
- ACLS (AHA) – required for certain units (e.g., ED, RRT).
- PALS (AHA) – required if working in Pediatrics or ED.
- NRP – required if working in Pediatrics.
- TNCC – required for ED.
- EFM – as applicable.
- CPI – as applicable.
- ENPC – as applicable.
Scheduling & Work Conditions
- No call required.
- Floating to other med-surg areas including AU and ER.
- Weekend work every other weekend.
- Must be available for the first two weeks of the assignment.
- Requests for time off after offer must be discussed with onsite manager.
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Criminal background check within 45 days of start, including lifetime search back to age 18.
- Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks.
- Michigan LARA fingerprinting required within 45 days of start for certain positions.
- Education verification (copy of highest degree or diploma).
- Physical exam within 1 year of start.
- Drug testing: 10-panel including Marijuana/THC within 45 days of start.
- Immunizations required:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (must include pertussis).
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 45 days of start.
- Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella – 2 vaccines or positive titer.
- Hepatitis B – titer, series, or facility declination.
- Varicella – 2 vaccines or positive titer.
- Flu vaccination or approved exemption required for candidates starting after November 1.
- Competency exams: Medication test/pharmacology and specialty competency exam within 1 year prior to assignment start (passing score ≥80%).
- Skills checklist updated annually.
- References: One professional reference from a supervisor or manager required.
- Employment application/resume with full 7 years work history, no gaps.

- No explicit prior travel experience required.
Summary
This is a 13-week travel contract Registered Nurse position in a step-down unit caring for general medical and oncology patients. Candidates must have at least 2 years of PCU/Stepdown experience, hold Michigan RN licensure, BLS, NIH Stroke Certification, and ONCC or ONS certification in hand. The role involves chemotherapy administration, IV skills, and use of EPIC documentation. Weekend work every other weekend and floating to other med-surg areas including ER is required. Comprehensive background checks, immunizations, and competency verifications are mandatory.
