Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: Fredericksburg, Virginia
Unit: CVICU (Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit)
Job Description
Unit Details:
- CVICU with specialized patient population including trauma, cardiovascular surgery (TAVRs, CABGs), neurosurgery, and other complex surgical cases.
- Patient diagnoses include acute ventilator needs, COVID+ with high O2 demand, DKA, severe sepsis, unstable GI bleed, trauma, open heart recovery, TAVR recovery, post code blue, multi-system organ failure, and need for CRRT.
- Ratios: 1:2-3; if floating to step-down unit, 1:3-4 (appropriate to skill level and acuity).
- No travel pairs allowed on this unit.
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend.
- No on-call required.
- Floating within scope expected to meet facility needs.
- Locals accepted.
- Block scheduling not accommodated.
- No holiday RTO (request time off) will be approved.
Start Date: ASAP
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Required Qualifications
- Virginia or compact nursing license.
- ACLS certification (AHA provider card required).
- NIH Stroke Certification (AHA, APEX, or Blue Cloud accepted).
- Minimum 2 years of nursing experience.
- CRRT (Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy) experience is mandatory.
- Manager prefers candidates with skills in at least one of the following: IABP, Impella, CRRT Prismax, or EVD Drain.
Skills & Competencies
- Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias.
- Arterial line management.
- Blood product administration.
- Experience with acute ventilator management.
- Ability to care for complex post-surgical patients including open heart and TAVR recovery.

Certifications & Documentation Required
Licenses:
- Valid Virginia or compact RN license with primary source verification.
- NURSYS verification required for all RNs.
Certifications:
- ACLS (AHA provider card only).
- BLS (AHA provider card only).
- NIH Stroke Certification (AHA, APEX, or Blue Cloud).
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) as applicable.
Health Requirements:
- Physical exam within 1 year prior to start.
- Fit mask (N95) certification, updated annually.
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray as required.
- Drug testing within 30 days prior to start.
- Immunizations or immunity documentation for Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella.
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption.
- COVID-19 vaccination documentation recommended but not required.
Background Checks:
- Lifetime background check within 1 year prior to start.
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required.
- Education verification of highest degree.
Competency Exams:
- Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam required for RNs.
- Color Blind Testing required for all clinical candidates.
- General competency exam required for all clinical candidates.
Facility Specific Documents:
- Code of Conduct Acknowledgment.
- Confidentiality and Security Agreement.
- Epic Experience Screening Form (time sensitive).
- WorkRamp Modules (orientation and competency training).
- Job Description Acknowledgment.
- Orientation Packet & Acknowledgement Form.
References & Work History
Two references required:
- One from current year of assignment.
- One within last 2 years.
- Must be from a manager, supervisor, team leader, Charge RN, or MD/DO/PA who supervised the candidate.
- References from this facility or system are not accepted; must be from outside facilities.
Employment application and work history verification for 2 years required (10 years if only CRT license).
Additional Notes
- No holiday time off approved.
- Floating to step-down unit may be required within scope.
- First-time travelers accepted.
