Job Description

The Ultrasound Technologist performs diagnostic sonographic examinations using ultrasonic equipment to locate, evaluate, and record critical physiological, pathological, and anatomical data. The role involves producing ultrasound images to assist in medical diagnosis, ensuring patient and staff safety, performing patient screening according to protocols, and providing pre- and post-procedure education to patients and families. The technologist may also evaluate competency levels of others as a preceptor and reports to a supervisor or manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate all ultrasound equipment and perform procedures efficiently without compromising quality.
  • Follow physician orders and obtain patient history before procedures.
  • Explain procedures to patients to facilitate cooperation and reduce anxiety.
  • Coordinate ultrasound scheduling to minimize patient wait times.
  • Maintain patient and general safety by adhering to infection control practices, using PPE, and reporting safety hazards.
  • Use proper body mechanics when moving patients.
  • Perform equipment maintenance as required.

Required Credentials & Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support): AHA or ARC only, required before onboarding.
  • ARDMS (American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography): Required before onboarding.
  • FMOLHS American Registry of Diagnostic Sonography Registry: Required before onboarding.
  • FMOLHS 1 Specialty Registries: Required before onboarding.

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • COVID-19 Vaccine: Optional; proof of vaccine or exemption accepted.
  • MMR: Proof of 2 immunizations, positive titer, or declination accepted.
  • Fit Test: Required within 1 year prior to start; must be one of the specified N95 mask types; updated annually.
  • Hepatitis B: Proof of 3 immunizations, positive titer, or declination accepted.
  • Influenza Vaccine: Optional; medical or religious exemptions accepted with proper documentation.
  • TB Test: Negative QuantiFERON blood test within 1 year or 2-step skin test; if positive, must provide clearance documentation.
  • Health Statement: Signed within 1 year of start, stating ability to work without restrictions.
  • Varicella: Proof of 2 immunizations, positive titer, or declination accepted.
  • Tdap: Proof of vaccination within past 10 years or declination accepted.
  • Annual TB Questionnaire: Required within 6 months of start; additional documentation if positive.

Background & Screening Requirements

  • Criminal Background Check: Must be completed within 30 days prior to start, including SSN address trace, county and national criminal checks, education and employment verification, and driving record.
  • Drug Screen: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days prior to start.
  • Skills Checklist: Unit-specific checklist within 1 year prior to start; updated annually.
  • Competency Exam: Passing score (80% or higher) on FMOLHS competency exams within 1 year prior to start.
  • Core Competencies: Current within 1 year prior to start with passing score (80% or higher); includes HIPAA, safety, infection control, and other required topics.
  • Badge Photo: Forward-facing, well-lit JPEG photo with neutral background.
  • Contract Annual Education: Required as per FMOLHS guidelines.
  • Eye Exam & Color Vision: Ishihara Color Test and Snellen Vision test within 1 year prior to start.
  • Code of Conduct: Signed and dated annually.

Additional Professional Requirements

  • FMOLHS Resume: Required at submission.
  • FMOLHS HRIS Form: Required at submission.
