Registered Nurse (PCU)
Location: Grand Island, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Seeking a PCU Registered Nurse for a 33-bed stepdown unit with a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:4-5. The unit cares for patients ranging from young adults to geriatrics with conditions such as sepsis, STEMI, CHF, chest pain, COVID, stroke, renal failure, COPD, DKA, and complex multisystem failure.
Schedule & Shifts
- Shifts: 0630-1900 and 1830-0700
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday Requirement: As needed
- Scheduling: Unit schedulers assign traveler schedules (no self-scheduling)
- Floating: May float to MedSurg, Inpatient Rehab, or Skilled Care units
Orientation
- First week: Classroom orientation
- Followed by: Two 12-hour shifts on the floor
- RN must pass a 90% score on an open book skills exam during orientation to continue employment
Unit Details
- Nurse responsibilities include titrating drips such as Heparin, Amiodarone, Cardizem, Nitroglycerin, IV antibiotics, and Insulin
- Charge nurse present on each shift and takes an assignment
- CNAs available with a fluctuating 1:10 ratio based on census
- Respiratory equipment includes BiPAP and Airvo
- Tele/Monitor techs present; RNs must read and interpret cardiac strips
- Dress code: Navy blue scrubs
- Busy patient flow with admissions and discharges often occurring within the same 6-hour period
- Emphasis on teamwork, positive attitude, patient engagement, bedside report, and hourly rounding
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 1 year of unit experience in PCU or similar setting
- Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS
- Valid driver’s license required at time of submission
- Must comply with fingernail policy: artificial nails prohibited in patient care areas
- Must pass RN skills exam during orientation (90% required)
Additional Notes
- Candidates must live within a 50-mile radius of the facility
- Candidates may not currently be employed full time, part time, or PRN with any related healthcare system facilities within the specified radius
- Return to work (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO extensions will be approved
