Registered Nurse (ICU)

Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour shifts (0630-1830, 1830-0630)
Hours Guaranteed: 36 hours per week
Orientation: 2 shifts of unit/department-specific orientation

Unit Details

• Unit Type: Medical-Surgical ICU
• Number of Beds: 34
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:

  • ICU: 1:1-2
  • PCU: 1:4-5
  • Med Surg: 1:5-6
• Patient Population: Adults and pediatrics over 15 years old
• Common Diagnoses:

  • Neuro surgery (experience not required)
  • Respiratory failure, ARDS, MODS, sepsis, stroke
  • Cardiogenic shock (impella, balloon pump; experience not required)
  • Renal failure (CRRT; experience not required)
  • General surgery, psych/OD, GI bleeds
  • Cancer-specific surgeries (e.g., esophagectomy, internal chemo administration)
• Equipment & Monitoring:

  • CVPs, Arterial lines, Swan-Ganz catheters, EV-1000, ICP monitoring (training provided)
  • Zoll Thermoguard for hypothermia protocol
  • Bell Mont rapid transfuser
  • Respiratory equipment from nasal cannula to ventilators (RNs troubleshoot)
  • Draeger heart monitoring with centralized telemetry; RNs must read and interpret strips (no telemetry techs)

Responsibilities

• Titrate drips including vasopressors, paralytics, narcotics, sedation, antiarrhythmics
• Charge nurse present on each shift and participates in Rapid Response Teams and Codes
• Collaborate with attendings, fellows, residents, and student providers
• Float to all inpatient units except Maternity/NICU
• Follow scrub color/dress code: Navy Blue

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years recent ICU experience
• Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
• Must pass a 90% score on a pass/fail skills exam during orientation (open book)
• Valid driver’s license required at submission (used to verify candidate location within 50-mile radius)
• Compliance with fingernail policy: artificial nails prohibited in patient care areas

• Fast-paced tertiary hospital environment with volume fluctuations
• Successful candidates demonstrate critical thinking, positive attitude, teamwork, and willingness to ask questions and help others
• Weekend requirement: every other weekend
• Holiday requirement: 2 out of 3 major holidays or every other holiday, based on unit needs
• Scheduling is managed by the unit manager (no self-scheduling)
• Rapid turnaround time required: availability within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO approved

Restrictions

• Candidates may not be currently employed full time, part time, or PRN with any facility associated with a specific large healthcare system within a 50-mile radius
