Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (RN) – Medsurg

Location: Oakes, North Dakota
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Unit Information

• Unit Type: Medsurg
• Unit Size: 20 beds
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:5
• Common Patient Diagnoses: Falls, Congestive Heart Failure (CHF), bowel obstruction, Atrial Fibrillation (A-fib), Swingbed patients, and others
• Telemetry Monitors: Mindray Monitors (8 units); nurses read and document strips each shift (no monitor techs)
• Respiratory Equipment: Hamilton C1 ventilator with CPAP and BiPAP, high-flow oxygen; no ventilated patients kept on unit; nurses manage respiratory equipment and administer respiratory treatments
• Support Staff: CNAs and PCTs assist with vital signs, charting, intake/output documentation, and activities of daily living (ADLs)
• Charge Nurse: Present 24/7, does not take patient assignments, also covers ER; no house supervisor, nursing supervisor available Monday-Friday

Schedule & Work Requirements

• Shifts: 7 AM – 7 PM or 7 PM – 7 AM
• Scheduling: Manager scheduled with block scheduling available depending on staffing needs; schedule posted 6 weeks in advance
• Weekend Requirement: Every 3rd weekend or more if desired
• Holiday Requirement: Desired participation in holiday rotation
• Call/Standby: None
• Floating: May float to ER to assist; flexibility appreciated but not first to float depending on staffing
• Orientation: Unit-specific orientation available, typically 3-6 shifts depending on staff availability
• Dress Code: Scrubs required, no specific color mandated

Required Qualifications & Skills

• Licenses/Certifications:

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) – AHA
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) – AHA
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) – AHA
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) if working in ER (preferred but not mandatory for Medsurg)
• Experience:

  • Must be confident in assessments, infusion pump use, medication administration, social skills, teamwork, and reliability
  • Preferred: ER experience
  • First-time travelers are welcome (prior travel experience not required)
• Clinical Skills:

  • Ability and authorization to titrate drips (e.g., Insulin, Heparin, Levophed) and manage set rate drips (e.g., Amiodarone)
• Additional: Experience in critical access hospital settings is appreciated

• This is a critical access hospital environment where teamwork and versatility are essential; staff often wear many hats and work closely like a family with patients
• Nurses are expected to be flexible and knowledgeable about a variety of patient care needs
