Registered Nurse - Surgical Acute
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- Department: Surgical Acute
- Unit Size: 63 beds (49 private, 9 observation)
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- Day shift: 4-5 patients per RN
- Night shift: 5-6 patients per RN
- Common Patient Types: Post-op surgical, trauma, overflow medical
- Common Care Tasks: Dressing changes, wound care, IV therapy, pain management, drains, NG tubes, central lines, TPN
Schedule & Shifts
- Day Shift: 07:00 - 19:30
- Night Shift: 19:30 - 07:30
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday)
- Holiday Requirement: Rotate every other holiday
- Block scheduling may be considered with prior approval
- No call or standby requirement
Orientation & Training
- Unit-specific orientation: 2 shifts with preceptor
- Additional 12-hour shift for EPIC and professional orientation with unit educator
- Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours
Staffing & Support
- Charge Nurses: 2 per shift, do not take patient assignments
- House Supervisor: Available 24/7
- Patient Care Technicians (PCTs):
- Day: 7-10 patients per PCT
- Night: 10-15 patients per PCT
- Duties include vitals, accu checks, ADLs, turning, and ambulation
- Telemetry: Some patients on telemetry monitored by techs; RNs do not read strips
Clinical Details
- Required Certifications: BLS (AHA)
- Experience/Skills Required:
- Post-op patient care
- Critical thinking
- Good bedside manner
- Team player
- Drip Management: RNs do not titrate drips except Heparin (set rate only)
- Respiratory Equipment: No ventilators; CPAP and high flow managed by RT; RNs manage inhalers and can place patients on CPAP
Additional Information
- Travelers are first to float; will float to units matching their experience level
- If ICU RN floats to general unit, assigned 3 patients
- Scrub color: Any color allowed
- Drug-Free Workplace: Negative drug screen required
- Local placements accepted within 50-mile radius
Required Qualifications
- Active Illinois RN license or confirmation that application process has been initiated
- BLS certification (AHA)
