Job Description

Seeking an experienced ER travel nurse for a 13-week assignment starting ASAP. The position involves working 12-hour shifts in a hospital ER setting.

Unit Details

• ER is not trauma level designated, nor a STEMI or Stroke center
• 11 beds/trauma bays
• No fast track
• One triage room (not separately staffed; used only when patient rooms are full)
• ER holds are intermixed within the ER and managed by ER RNs
• 2 safe behavioral health rooms (not separate from other ER rooms)
• Security is available but not 24/7 and not housed in the ER
• Average patient volume: ~40 patients per day
• Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:3 or 1:4
• 24/7 physician coverage and 12-hour nurse practitioner coverage
• Charge nurse takes patient assignments; house supervisor on duty after 3pm daily
• ER techs provide 24/7 coverage; PRN sitters may be agency staff
• Respiratory therapists available for ABGs, intubation, EKGs, breathing treatments
• Respiratory equipment includes ventilators, CPAP, BiPAP, Vapotherm; RNs troubleshoot as needed
• Telemetry monitors: Nihon Koden; RNs read their own strips
• Portable x-ray available; CT not located in ER (transported by radiology unless STAT stroke head CT)
• Nurses attempt IV sticks; phlebotomy draws labs after unsuccessful attempts; Steri-path used for blood cultures

Scheduling & Shifts

• 12-hour shifts (7a-7p or 7p-7a)
• Every other weekend and holiday required
• Scheduling on a 6-week rotating schedule
• Occasional floating to other tasks
• No mandatory call or standby, but open call shifts may be available to pick up

Required Certifications & Licenses

• Current Illinois RN license
• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
• PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
• CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention)
• SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) certification preferred

Requirements / Qualifications

• Valid RN license in Illinois
• Minimum of 3 years of Emergency Department (ED) experience
• ED experience within the last year
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
• ACLS certification
• BLS certification
• PALS certification
• CPI certification

Orientation

• Unit-specific orientation varies based on prior experience with EMR and department
• Typically includes 1:1 clinical care coordinator support during the first week

Dress Code

• Grey top and black pants
