Emergency Department RN Opportunity

Job Overview

• Variable shifts (typically 6 AM - 6 PM, no mid shifts)
• Must have strong independent skills and at least 3 years of ER nursing experience
• Facility prefers candidates with 3 or more completed travel assignments
• Occasional floating to Med-Surg/Telemetry to assist other nurses (typically no own patients)
• Part of Rapid Response Team; may respond to RRTs and Codes in-house

• BLS
• ACLS
• PALS
• TNCC
• Preferred: NIHSS

Department & Patient Population

• Trauma Level: Critical Access Hospital (CAH)
• STEMI Receiving: Stabilize and transfer out STEMIs and strokes
• Beds: 8 ER beds
• No designated triage nurse; all ER nurses triage using ESI model
• No separate holding area; holds are kept in the ER
• 2 designated safe rooms for psychiatric patients with 24/7 security rounding every 15 minutes
• Security: In-house 24/7, rounds throughout hospital
• Average patient volume: ~30 patients/day (700/month)
• Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:3-4 depending on acuity and census
• Patient population: 25% pediatric, remainder adults; large Hispanic population

Common Diagnoses & Procedures

• High acuity cases including cardiac issues (arrhythmias, STEMIs, NSTEMIs, HTN, CHF exacerbations), strokes/post-strokes, traumas (MVAs, falls), orthopedic cases, GI issues, alcohol-related cases, overdoses, COPD, and more
• Must have triage experience and be comfortable with conscious sedation
• Common drips: All critical drips and sedation (including ketamine) for bedside procedures

Team & Support

• 1 ED physician onsite per 24-hour shift
• Designated working charge nurse available as a resource
• No CNAs in ER; primary care nursing model
• Nurses may precept nursing, EMT, and paramedic students (usually assigned to permanent staff but travelers may assist)
• Respiratory Therapist (RT) in ER 24/7, assists with intubation, ABGs, respiratory treatments, and equipment management
• Nurses may assist with respiratory equipment troubleshooting (NC, High Flow, CPAP, BiPAP, trachs, vents)
• No monitor techs; nurses read and interpret telemetry themselves
• X-ray and CT located near ER; transport assisted by radiology unless patient is critical (RN accompanies critical patients)
• RN responsible for lab draws upon IV starts; phlebotomy available if needed

Scheduling & Orientation

• Schedule typically block of 6 days on, 8 days off; flexible to fill gaps in permanent schedule
• Weekend requirement: Every other weekend or 1-2 weekends per month
• Holiday requirement: Every other holiday rotation; may be asked to work holidays
• No call or standby requirement
• Scrub color: Navy blue
• Orientation: 1 day general orientation + 1-2 days with preceptor
