Job Description
Under general supervision, the Surgical Technician II provides technical assistance to operating room physicians and nurses during difficult and complex surgical procedures. This role requires expertise and competencies specific to the designated service line.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare the operating room using physician’s preference cards and maintain/update these cards.
- Ensure adequate supply of instruments and materials to meet patient needs.
- Scrub in and set up instruments and supplies prior to procedures.
- Prepare sterile fields by obtaining, opening, and arranging instruments and supplies.
- Assist in draping the patient and operative area.
- Assist nurses in identifying operative specimens for laboratory analysis.
- Maintain vigilance during surgery to provide additional instruments or supplies as needed.
- Monitor and correct breaks in sterile technique.
- Deliver medications to the surgeon as required.
- Participate in sponge, needle, and instrument counts per policy.
- Report drains, packs, implants, etc., to circulating nurse and assist with dressings.
- Take emergency action when necessary.
- Assist with post-operative processing of instruments and equipment.
- Clean operating room areas and dispose of sharps according to policy.
- Participate in evaluation of new products, methods, or equipment.
- Serve as a clinical resource for physicians and staff in other departments.
- Communicate daily with Supervisor regarding service line needs, equipment, and supply issues.
- Act as liaison between physicians and Supervisor regarding instruments and supplies.
- Collaborate with other departments and vendors to stay updated on equipment and supplies.
- Assist in training other Surgical Technicians.
- Assist with patient transport as needed.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to climb, kneel, and perform duties under stressful situations.
- Frequent walking, standing, pushing, and pulling; ability to stand up to 6 hours per day.
- Excellent manual dexterity for handling instruments and equipment.
- Sufficient visual acuity for required tasks.
- Occasional pushing/pulling up to 100 pounds.
- Ability to move or position patients.
- Frequent exposure to needles, sharp objects, blood, body fluids, and communicable diseases.
Qualifications
- Minimum 1 year of relevant experience as a Surgical Technician.
- Service line competency achievement required.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association required upon hire.
- Knowledge of medical asepsis, surgical instruments, operating room setup, specimen handling, and inventory methods.
- Skill in maintaining effective working relationships and following technical instructions.
- Ability to scrub for all specialty areas.
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills to provide age-appropriate care across the lifespan (neonate to geriatric).
- Basic computer skills to check/respond to emails and edit preference cards.
Contract Length
- Approximately 13 weeks (89 days rounded to nearest week).
