Senior Surgical Technologist
Location: Detroit, Michigan
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse and Surgical Team members, the Senior Surgical Technologist is responsible for handling surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment during general to moderately complex surgical procedures. The role involves anticipating the needs of the surgeon and surgical team, supporting patient preparation and transport, and assisting with patient care duties to ensure safety and comfort. The technologist also responds to emergent situations following established procedures.
Key Responsibilities
- Apply advanced surgical techniques during complex procedures.
- Scrub on complex surgeries including:
- Liver and multi-visceral organ transplants
- Endovascular valve replacement and aneurysm repairs (TeVAR, FeVAR)
- Cardiac surgeries including cardiopulmonary bypass cases
- HIPEC procedures
- Prepare the operating room by setting up tables, instruments, and supplies according to the surgery type.
- Ensure proper functioning of instruments and equipment before use; report repairs as needed.
- Follow departmental policies, quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
- Maintain cost-consciousness in handling sterile supplies and surgical instruments.
- Assist Registered Nurses with patient admission, transfer, discharge, positioning, and prepping in the OR.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized operating room environment.
- Provide comfort and support to pre-operative patients with sensitivity to their care and privacy.
- Collaborate with peers and the surgical team in decision-making related to patient care.
- Participate in shared governance, audits, education, training/precepting of new staff and students, and continuous professional development.
- Respond appropriately to emergent situations in collaboration with the surgical team.
Required Qualifications
- Surgical Technologist certification
- Minimum of 3 years of Surgical Technician experience, including experience within the last year
- Current BLS certification
- High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent or completion of a Surgical Technology Program
- Cardiac scrub experience
- Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR) experience
