Registered Nurse – Medical Oncology (Night Shift)
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Job Overview
- Night shift (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each; 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
- Patient population: Adults and Geriatrics
- Specialty: Medical Oncology focusing on solid tumor cancers (breast, lung, prostate, pancreatic, colon, esophageal) and antineoplastic chemotherapy encounters
- Unit cares for patients throughout the cancer journey, including new diagnosis, treatment, and end-of-life care
- Staffing ratios goal: 1:4 (can be 1:5)
- Floating required to other MedSurg Oncology units
- No set/blocked scheduling; self-scheduling requests submitted for final schedule balancing
- Orientation:
- Week 1: Monday–Friday day shift orientation
- Week 2: 36 hours on-unit orientation with a preceptor
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio
- Minimum 2 years of Med Surg / Telemetry nursing experience, with at least some experience within the last year
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) from an accredited nursing program
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system
- Background checks including 7-year criminal history, FBI/BCI fingerprinting (Ohio-specific code 3701.881), EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG monitoring
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start
- Physical exam within 1 year confirming good health and free of contagious disease
- Immunizations and health requirements:
- Tdap vaccine (adult dose after age 11/12)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year (or TB questionnaire)
- 2 MMR vaccines or positive titers for measles, mumps, and rubella
- Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (declination acceptable)
- Varicella immunity via 2 vaccines or positive titer (medical exemptions require documentation)
- Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1–3/31) with mask requirement if declined
- Two professional references required, including at least one from a manager or formal leadership role
- Completion of medication/pharmacology competency exam and unit-specific competency exams prior to start
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually (minimum passing score 76%)
Preferred Qualifications
- Oncology experience preferred but not required
- Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) chemotherapy certification preferred
- Previous travel experience preferred
Additional Requirements & Policies
- Annual background check required by agency (not necessarily by client)
- Annual acknowledgment of orientation safety manual, ethics and compliance policies, dress code, and hand hygiene policies
- Fraud, waste, and abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually
- Fingerprinting results must be obtained prior to start; new fingerprinting required if break in service exceeds 90 days or results are older than 1 year
- Candidates must comply with facility-specific documentation and attestations as required
- Floating to other oncology med-surg units expected

Units are nice, staff are kind. Single patient rooms with 4:1 ratios day and night on med surg.
Cons
Scheduled every weekend, floated for the first 6 weeks of contract every shift. Not traveler friendly even though they say they are. Staff are treated well not travelers.
