NICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Covington, Louisiana
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 18:45–7:15)
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Overview

• Must have delivery attendance experience (vaginal and C-section).
• Patient ratio typically 1:2-3; may float to Normal Observation Unit (NOU) with ratios 1:4-6.
• Expected to float to the normal newborn nursery.
• Weekend requirement: every other weekend.
• Holiday requirement: at least 1 major and 1 minor holiday.
• Scheduling is self-managed with specified weekend and holiday obligations.

Required Qualifications

• Valid RN license in Louisiana
• Minimum 3 years of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) experience, including experience within the last year
• One completed travel nursing assignment
• BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
• Delivery attendance experience (vaginal and C-section)
• Proficient with Epic electronic health record system

Skills and Competencies

• Attend deliveries and assist with newborn transition.
• Admit and discharge neonates to/from NICU and NOU.
• Coordinate care with multidisciplinary team (NNP, MD, RN, Social Services, RT, Radiology, OT).
• Educate and update parents; assist new mothers with breastfeeding.
• Skilled in placement of IVs in neonates, drawing labs, and blood administration.
• Experienced level III NICU nurse with ventilator and central line management.
• Administer medications via multiple routes (IV, IM, SQ, ETT, OGT, NGT, oral, rectal, topical, eye drops/ointment).

Procedures Performed

• Assist with chest tube insertion, PICC, UAC, and UVC placement.
• Assist with x-rays, capillary blood gases (CBG), arterial blood gases (ABG), ultrasounds, echocardiograms, EEGs.
• Perform intubation, oxygen and nitric oxide administration, and exchange transfusions.

Additional Requirements

• Scrubs color: Grape/Purple.
• Must provide government-issued photo ID matching all documentation.
• Background check within 6 months covering all locations lived/worked/schooled in past 7 years.
• Required to complete various background screenings (EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, Sex Offender Search).
• Required to complete competency exams annually (medication/pharmacology, core competencies).
• Drug screening within 30 days of start (includes comprehensive panel).
• Immunizations and health documentation required:

  • Tdap within 10 years (declinations accepted with proper forms).
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray per protocol.
  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titer.
  • Hepatitis B series, titer, or declination.
  • Varicella vaccination or positive titer.
  • Seasonal flu vaccination/documentation required during flu season (Oct 1–Mar 31), with exemptions and declinations accepted.
• Physical exam within 12 months of start (not required by employer but required by placement agency).
• Employment application must include 7 years of work history with no gaps over 30 days.

Work Environment

• Night shift in a Level III NICU setting.
• Float to Normal Observation Unit and newborn nursery as needed.
• Collaborative multidisciplinary team environment.
