Job Opportunity: Emergency Room Registered Nurse (Night Shift)

Location

  • Largo, Maryland

Employment Type

  • Travel/Contract

Contract Length

  • 13 weeks

Schedule

  • Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (19:30 - 08:00)
  • Every other weekend required
  • Holidays required as scheduled
  • Floating within specialty as needed
  • No scheduled on-call

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years of Registered Nurse experience in Emergency Department
  • Travel experience required; however, first-time travelers with 5+ years of experience will be considered

Required Licenses and Certifications

  • Maryland RN license
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • NIH Stroke Certification
  • CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute)
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)

Clinical and Technical Skills

  • Experience with EPIC charting system required
  • Competency exams required as applicable, including medication/pharmacology, dysrhythmia/EKG, age-specific, and general competency exams (must score 80% or higher)
  • Familiarity with specialized equipment such as Belmont (trauma), Giraffe warmer (neonates), Rapid infuser, and Lucas device (cardiac arrests)

Patient Population and Unit Details

  • Patient age group: All ages
  • Average daily census: 140 patients
  • Unit beds: 46
  • Patient diagnoses commonly seen: Chest Pain, Stroke, Sepsis, Cardiac Arrest, Trauma, Respiratory Illness, Respiratory Arrest
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4, up to 1:5 with lower acuity patients

Required Documentation and Compliance

  • Government-issued photo ID and valid RN license primary source verification
  • Background check including 7-year criminal history, education verification, and state-specific exclusions (Maryland Medicaid Sanctioned Providers List)
  • Negative 9-panel drug screen within 30 days prior to start (instant tests not accepted)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Fit mask test within 1 year of start
  • Immunizations or proof of immunity required for:
    • TB (negative test or chest X-ray as applicable, updated annually)
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (required for pediatric units; not required for ER RN unless pediatric ER)
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella (positive titer or vaccination series)
    • Hepatitis B (positive titer or declination; series not accepted)
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or approved medical/religious exemption (for 2025-26 season)
  • COVID vaccine not required for this location but documentation collected for tracking
  • Two supervisory references within 1 year of start
  • Employment application/resume completed within 30 days of start
  • Verification of previous 5 years of employment history (attestation accepted if necessary)
  • Facility-specific documents including confidentiality agreements, dress code review, badge photo, and job description acknowledgment must be completed prior to start

Additional Notes

  • Floating within the specialty may be required
  • No scheduled on-call duties
  • Epic training test-out option available for experienced users meeting eligibility criteria
  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training required; "Calm Every Storm" course for all units except Behavioral Health, which requires CPI Blue Card certification

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Maryland
  • Minimum 3 years of Emergency Department (ED) experience, including experience within the last year
  • Completion of at least one travel assignment; first-time travelers with 5+ years of experience will be considered
  • Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications issued by the American Heart Association
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) certification
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system
