Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (L&D)

Location: New Haven, Connecticut
Employment Type: Per Diem
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Specialty & Experience Requirements

  • Specialty: Labor & Delivery Registered Nurse
  • Required Experience: 2 years in L&D (Labor & Delivery)
  • Prior travel experience: Not required (1st time travelers accepted)

Certifications Required

  • Active nursing license
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - required
  • EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) - required; AWHONN Beginner preferred

References

  • 2 clinical references
  • At least 1 leadership reference from assignments within the last year

Preferred Experience & Work Setting

  • Experience in a teaching hospital
  • Experience with high-risk antepartum patients
  • Trauma Level I experience
  • Facility births/month: 200-300

Required Skills & Competencies

  • Use and interpretation of External and Internal Fetal Monitoring (EFM, IUPC)
  • Recognition and treatment of abnormal fetal heart rate patterns
  • Drawing venous blood, starting and maintaining IVs, infusion pumps/drips/IV monitoring
  • Administration and management of:
    • Antihypertensives
    • Insulin drips
    • Magnesium Sulfate therapy
    • Pitocin (oxytocin)
    • Prostaglandins
    • Terbutaline
    • Amnioinfusion
  • Assist with high-risk and vaginal deliveries
  • Circulate for C-sections, assist with forceps/vacuum extraction
  • Manage hemorrhage/shock and recover C-section patients
  • APGAR scoring and newborn care including:
    • Neonatal resuscitation
    • Radiant warmers/thermoregulation
    • Infant identification and security banding
    • Newborn assessment and hypoglycemia management
  • Pain assessment and management including epidural anesthesia, general anesthesia, IV conscious sedation, nitrous oxide, opioids
  • Breastfeeding/lactation support
  • Foley catheter insertion/management
  • Fundus, lochia, perineum care
  • Use of electric/manual breast pumps
  • Wound assessment and care
  • Couplet care, multiple births, postpartum hemorrhage, pregnancy-induced hypertension

Preferred Skills

  • Assist with sterile speculum exams (effacement, dilation, station, presentation)
  • NST (Non-Stress Tests)
  • Reflex checks, edema assessment, clonus
  • Adult cardiac arrest and infant/neonatal arrest response
  • Use of rapid response/code teams
  • Telemetry interpretation
  • Administration of blood and blood products
  • Maintain central lines (CVC/PICC)
  • Anticoagulants and antiseizure medication administration
  • Collect cord samples
  • Use of PCA (IV)
  • Cervical cerclage, D&C, tubal ligation assistance

Shift Details

  • 12-hour shifts
  • Day shift: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM
  • Commitment: Minimum 4 shifts per month

Orientation

  • 2-3 days orientation:
    • Virtual orientation on Friday
    • In-person orientation on Monday
    • Epic training on Wednesday (test-out available for experienced candidates)

Patient Ratio

  • 1:2 nurse-to-patient ratio

Systems & Equipment

  • Charting: Epic, Obix
  • Medication system: Pyxis
  • Scrubs provided (Royal Blue)

Compliance & Background Checks

  • 7-year criminal background check including sex offender registry
  • Primary source verification of state license
  • Required health documents:
    • Physical exam within last 12 months
    • Respiratory fit mask test
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within last year
    • Immunizations or titers for Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B
    • Drug screening (10-panel) within 30 days of start
    • Flu vaccination or declination accepted
    • COVID-19 vaccination requirements per state regulations (medical exemptions only; no religious exemptions)

Additional Notes

  • 1-year separation period for previous permanent employees
  • Flu declinations accepted; COVID vaccination not required for this position
  • Candidates must prioritize compliance and meet all deadlines to be cleared before start
  • Shifts access granted only after successful clearance and orientation completion
