Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: New Brunswick, New Jersey
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Requirements & Description

  • Experience: 3+ years preferred; first-time travelers considered
  • Certifications Required:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • CNOR preferred
  • On Call: 32 total hours per month
  • Work Details:
    • RNs will float to Main OR if no CVOR cases
    • No block schedule
    • Locals accepted
    • Scrub experience required for open CVOR cases and TAVR
  • Patient Mix:
    • Open heart adult surgery including CABG, valve surgeries (aortic, mitral, pulmonic)
  • Required Skills:
    • Knowledge of devices: Impella, HeartMate, ECMO, laser lead extractions, TAVR (also done in main OR)
  • Uniform: Hospital provided scrubs

Required Documentation & Clearances

  • Identification: Government-issued photo ID (Driver’s license required within 48 hours of signing)
  • Background Checks:
    • Criminal background check within 30 days of start
    • Must include all aliases, locations lived/worked in past 7 years, SS trace, nationwide, sex offender, counties, states, federal, OFAC, FACIS Level 3
    • Pending background checks require attestation of no pending charges or criminal history
    • MVR/DMV hits do not require facility review for this location
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and for renewals
    • New Jersey Department of Treasury Exclusions List check required within 30 days of start and for extensions
  • Health Documents:
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 3 months of start (specific protocols for positive TB history)
    • Physical exam within 12 months stating clearance to perform essential job functions and free of communicable disease
    • Drug screen within 30 days of start (10-panel urine screen)
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually
    • Immunizations or positive titers required for: Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap
    • Fit test and respiratory medical clearance required prior to start (on-site fit testing mandatory)
    • Latex allergy questionnaire if job tasks require glove use
    • Color blindness exam if job tasks require color discrimination
  • Certifications:
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) required for many adult critical care units and preferred for behavioral health; not required for CVOR or some other units
    • BLS required for all RNs and many tech roles
    • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) required for NICU, L&D, Mother Baby, Nursery, Special Care Nursery
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) required for pediatric ER, acute care, ED, PACU, PICU
    • Chemotherapy certification required for adult and pediatric chemo nurses (ONS/ONCC or APHON)
    • Electronic Fetal Monitoring certification may be required for Mother-Baby and L&D RNs
    • Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) required for ER, Pediatric ER, Behavioral Health RNs (online and in-person training)
    • NIH Stroke Certification required for adult critical care, ED, Telemetry, MS/Tele, Cath Lab, and stroke center units
    • Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology (CBIC) certification required for Infection Control RNs
  • Competency Exams:
    • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required for all RNs and LPNs within 12 months of start
    • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required for ED, telemetry, PCU, adult critical care units, PACU, Cath Lab, educators
    • Color blind testing required within 1 year if applicable
    • Pass/fail testing for EKG and medication knowledge with remediation and cancellation policies
  • History & References:
    • 7 years of work history required with verification
    • 2 references within last 2 years, including at least one managerial reference
    • Skills checklist updated annually (Aya requirement)
  • Facility Specific Requirements:
    • Floating policy must be completed for every new assignment or site transfer
    • Annual education sign-off and various CEUs (Stroke, Trauma, Med Surg, CST) required depending on role
    • Vendor medical clearance form required for candidates with history of positive TB
    • Annual OSHA, HIPAA, and Joint Commission training required
    • Influenza vaccination or exemption attestation required annually
    • Respiratory medical clearance and fit testing mandatory on-site prior to start

Additional Notes

  • Candidates switching between RWJ sites with less than 30-day gap may reuse some documentation if within required timeframes
  • Candidates with name changes must provide proof and include all names in background checks
  • Some certifications and competencies have specific expiration and renewal requirements
  • Candidates must comply with all health and safety protocols including mask and vaccination policies

This position offers a challenging and rewarding opportunity to work in a high-acuity cardiovascular surgical environment with a diverse patient population. Candidates should be prepared for on-call duties and flexible floating assignments within the OR.
