Job Opportunity: Emergency Department Registered Nurse (RN)
Location: Charleston, West Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Shift: 3x12 hour nights (7 PM - 7 AM), weekdays, every other weekend required
- Patient Ratio: 4:1
- Patient Population: Infants to Geriatrics
- Unit Description: Level 1 Trauma, 24 beds
- Neurological, orthopedic, psychiatric, renal emergencies
- High psychiatric patient population (no separate psych area)
- Multiple high acuity patients boarding frequently
- Floating: Clinician may float within scope to meet facility needs
- Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week
- Call Requirements: None
Experience Requirements
- Registered Nurse Experience: Minimum 2 years RN experience required
- Specialty Experience: Minimum 1 year Emergency Department experience required
- Prior Travel Experience: Not required; first-time travelers accepted if they have appropriate experience
Licensure
- WV or Compact RN License required
- Pending license accepted for submission but must have active WV/Compact RN license before start
Certifications Required (Must be current before start)
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA only
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - AHA only
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
- CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) - Blue Card required; online courses not accepted

- Telemetry
Scheduling & Orientation
- Orientation/Start Date held every other week on Thursday
- Blocked schedules possible (discuss during interview)
- Radius rule: Candidates must live more than 100 miles from facility to submit; 75-100 miles considered case-by-case
Submission Requirements
- Candidate profile (work history)
- Specialty-specific skills checklist
- Minimum 2 manager/charge nurse references within past 2 years
- RN license verification (NURSYS verification within 2 days of submission)
- Social Security Number verification
- Clearly state shift preference (any, days, or nights)
Health & Compliance Requirements
- Background Check: 7-year criminal background check within 30 days of start
- Drug Screen: Within 30 days of start, includes multiple substances; no placeholders allowed
- Physical Exam: Within 1 year of start, must state candidate is in good health and able to perform job duties
- Fit Mask Testing: Annual fit testing required (3M N95 1860 Small/Regular or Aura 9205)
- Vaccinations:
- COVID-19 vaccination not mandatory; proof of vaccination or signed declination accepted
- Flu vaccine required during flu season (Oct 1 - Mar 31) unless approved medical/religious exemption
- Tdap vaccination required (medical/religious exemptions allowed with approval)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 3 months of start
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) and Varicella immunity required (vaccines or positive titers)
- Hepatitis B vaccination or immunity documentation required
- Pass/Fail Testing: EKG, Medication Calculation, and Blood Administration tests required for nursing candidates
- Annual Skills Checklist: Must be completed and demonstrate true skills
Additional Notes
- No call requirements
- Floating within scope may be required
- Candidates must comply with facility dress code, blood administration policy, and other facility-specific documents
- Candidates must complete required inservice training modules prior to start (approx. 4 hours)
- Returning permanent employees cannot return as travelers for 2 years after last permanent date worked
- Candidates must have a valid Driver’s License and Social Security Card (or proof of request)
- References must be from a manager, supervisor, or charge nurse who directly supervised the candidate within 1 year of start
