Position Details
- Specialty: PreOp-PACU
- Location: Rapid City, South Dakota

- Contract Length: 13 weeks
General Information
- Beds:
- 24 Pre-Op/Phase 2
- 19 PACU
- Minimum Experience Required: 1.5 years (system requirement)
- First-Time Travelers: Not accepted
Patient Population
- Types:
- Infants to Geriatric patients (limited infant recovery)
- Endoscopy patients (prep and discharge only)
- Ambulatory/Elective, Acute care/Trauma
Patient Ratios
- RN Ratios:
- Pre-Op: 1:2-3
- PACU: 1:1 or 1:2
- Phase 2: 1:2-4
- Ratios depend on acuity levels, presence of airways, ages, comorbidities, and special monitoring needs.
Required Certifications
- RN:
- BLS
- ACLS
- PALS
Required Education
- Completion of a nursing education program approved by the board of nursing; Registered Nurse (RN) - South Dakota Board of Nursing.
Skills Required
- Night Shift RN (2030-0700):
- Critical Care experience and competencies with ICU cases, including hemodynamic drips and ventilated patients.
- Comfort with Preop, Recovery, and Discharge of patients.
- Ability to manage boarded patients if inpatient beds are full.
- Variable Shift RN:
- Competencies may include IV insertion, ventilator training, epidural/PCA setup/initiation, blood product transfusions, and administration/monitoring of moderate sedation.
Support on the Unit
- Staffing:
- 6 Nurse Aides during daytime hours (0530-1700)
- Charge Nurse: 1-2 in PreOp and PACU
- Resource Nurses: 3 Clinical Resource nurses available
- RT team available as needed
Charting System/Equipment
- Systems: EPIC (experience preferred), Omnicell
Orientation
- General facility orientation followed by a week-long orientation (1 day in each department: PreOp, PACU, Phase II, Endo).
Scheduling
- Shifts:
- Days/Variable: 3 12-hour shifts per week (0500-2300)
- Nights: 3 12-hour shifts per week (1830-0700)
- Weekend Rotation: Every three weeks
- Call Requirements:
- 2300-0700 call shift every 2-3 weeks (except for night RN)
- Response time: 15 minutes
Holiday Expectations
- Rotated between call teams; work 2 holidays per year.
