Operating Room Technician

Location: Johnson City, New York
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Summary

Under general direction, the Operating Room Technician observes and practices sterile technique, maintains asepsis, and assists the surgeon as needed. Actively participates in patient care and safety, conserves OR supplies, and functions as a team member of the OR staff.

Key Responsibilities

• Follow infection control policies and demonstrate expertise in surgical scrub technique.
• Adhere to sterile technique principles preoperatively and intra-operatively.
• Assist the surgeon with gowning, gloving, draping, and passing instruments and related items during procedures.
• Anticipate surgeon’s needs for instruments, sutures, and equipment.
• Maintain an organized operative field, keeping instruments clean and properly placed.
• Keep accurate counts of sponges, tapes, needles, dissectors, and instruments.
• Prepare for cases by assembling supplies and equipment per preference cards; identify conflicts or problems.
• Care for instruments and supplies appropriately after each case.
• Provide a safe surgical environment by identifying potential hazards and assisting in preoperative equipment checks.
• Display knowledge of potential hazards in the OR (equipment, chemicals, gases).
• Utilize experienced OR staff as a resource and assist new OR personnel.
• Assist in suturing, retracting, and suctioning under surgeon’s direction.
• Handle and identify specimens according to policy.
• Expedite efficient OR turnover between cases.
• Participate in rotating call duty.
• Perform additional responsibilities as requested.

Work Schedule

• Either 5 shifts of 8 hours or 4 shifts of 10 hours per week.
• Shift end time at 11:30 PM (possible shifts: 3 PM–11:30 PM or 1 PM–11:30 PM).
• One weekend every 3 to 4 weeks (Saturday and Sunday evening shifts ending at 11:30 PM).
• 1 to 2 night call shifts per week (11:30 PM–7 AM).
• Shift after shift worked on scheduled weekend.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Surgical Technician with at least 1 year of experience, including experience within the last year.
• Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential from NBSTSA or equivalent.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
• Experience working in an Operating Room (OR) environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous Operating Room experience.
• Previous Surgical Technologist experience in General OR.
