Registered Nurse (RN) – MedSurg/Telemetry Float Pool
Location: Bridgeport, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- Float pool covers multiple units including MedSurg and Telemetry.
- Frequent float units: 6N (36 beds), 7N (29 beds), also 4N, 5S, 6S (each 36 beds), and Critical Care (20 beds).
- Nurse-to-patient ratios typically 1:5-6 for day and night shifts; occasionally up to 1:7 depending on acuity.
- Units primarily consist of private rooms.
Patient Population & Common Diagnoses
- Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
- Cardiac catheterization patients
- Chest pain
- Pneumonia
- Chronic renal disease
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
- Orthopedics
- Oncology (permanent staff administer chemotherapy)
Required Certifications & Qualifications
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications required.
- Must pass a cardiac rhythm exam prior to assignment (ACLS-trained RNs are expected to pass).
- No titration of drips required.
- Must be able to read and interpret telemetry strips.
- RN license required.
Experience Requirements
- Specialty experience: MedSurg/Telemetry float pool (years of experience not explicitly stated; assume standard MedSurg RN experience).
- Prior travel experience: Not explicitly required.
Staffing & Support
- Charge nurse present on every unit; day charge nurse does not take patient assignments, night charge nurse does.
- Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) are used on all units.
- Respiratory therapy (RT) manages CPAP and BiPAP equipment; nurses are not expected to manage respiratory equipment.
- Monitor techs available on most units, but RNs must be able to interpret telemetry strips.
Shifts & Scheduling
- 12-hour shifts: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM and 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM.
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday) for both day and night shifts.
- Holiday shifts included in rotation with permanent staff.
- Float pool RNs report to clinical coordinator before shift for unit assignment.
- Assignments typically to a "parent unit" with basic telemetry patients within RN scope of practice.
Orientation & Training
- 1-2 shifts of orientation with a preceptor on the unit.
Dress Code
- Royal blue scrubs for RNs.
Additional Notes
- No drip titration required.
- Must be comfortable floating to multiple units within a 50-mile radius.
- Must provide a copy of an unexpired driver’s license with application.

Cons
Was told in phone interview that max ratio would be 1:9. Reality was 1:15. Unit was considered transitional, but patients were more like med/surg. Not willing to risk my license for such unsafe ratios.
