Pathology Assistant

Location: White Plains, New York
Contract Length: 13 weeks (approximately 3 months)
Schedule: Monday - Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM, Full time

Job Summary

Assist in the preparation and performance of gross examination and dissection of surgical pathology specimens under the supervision of a pathologist. Responsibilities include specimen accessioning, tissue preparation for microscopic examination, frozen section preparation, and maintaining communication with pathology and histology staff.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform gross examination and dissection of surgical pathology specimens.
• Describe gross anatomic features and prepare tissue sections for microscopic examination, including frozen and permanent sections.
• Ensure proper specimen accessioning and labeling.
• Obtain relevant clinical records, laboratory data, and imaging when indicated.
• Assist in coding gross specimens during description.
• Organize and coordinate anatomic pathology grossing for specimens.
• Update and troubleshoot voice recognition templates and systems.
• Assist in preparation, staining, and cover slipping of frozen section samples.
• Inventory gross room supplies.
• Safely operate grossing table, handsaw, and cryostat.
• Prepare specimens for histology and post mortem examinations as needed.
• Manage cassette downloads and data entry in Laboratory Information System (LIS).
• Select samples for decalcification and ensure proper processing.
• Update Gross Room Manual as needed.
• Maintain open communication with pathologists and histology staff.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• New York State license required.
• B.S. Degree in Biology or related science with certification from a Pathologists’ Assistant Program or equivalent.
• Minimum 2 years of experience preferred.
• ASCP certification preferred.
• BLS (AHA) certification required.
• Flu vaccine required.

• Exposure to chemicals as required for laboratory tasks, with safety data available.
• Professional office environment using standard office equipment.

• Ability to remain stationary for extended periods and move about the office frequently.

• All populations, including neonatal, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
• Includes patients with exceptional communication needs, developmental delays, end-of-life care, isolation precautions, cultural needs, and bariatric patients.
