Job Overview

• Specialty: PCU/IMC Float (Progressive Care Unit / Intermediate Care)
• Location: Durango, Colorado
• Contract Length: 13 weeks
• Unit/Department: PCU/IMC Float covering multiple units including General, Cardiac, Neuro, Oncology, Rehab, Renal, Bariatrics, Ortho, Trauma, ED Observation, and more.

Key Responsibilities

• Float throughout a 60-mile radius zone, covering various PCU/IMC units.
• Manage patient care with nurse-to-patient ratios of 1:3-4 depending on acuity.
• Comfortable titrating and managing cardiac drips, insulin, ativan, and heparin.
• May be asked to float into ICU (low acuity holds), PCU/Stepdown, and Medical-Surgical Telemetry units.
• Participate in weekend and holiday rotations as needed.
• Follow a 7am-7pm shift schedule with a 6-week schedule made by leadership.
• Flexibility required to fill scheduling gaps; time off requests must be submitted before assignment start.
• Orientation includes 1-2 days with a preceptor.

Patient Population

• Adults to geriatrics with diagnoses including:

  • Cardiac, Neuro, Orthopedics, Oncology, Renal, Urology post-surgical
  • General Surgery post-appendectomy
  • Gynecology, Psychiatry/Detox, ENT, General Medicine
  • Stable long-term placement patients

Required Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) - AHA
• NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Required Experience & Skills

• Minimum 2 years of PCU/IMC nursing experience (higher experience requirement takes precedence).
• Preferred experience with neurology patients.
• Preferred experience with Epic electronic health records.
• Must be comfortable managing and titrating cardiac drips (dopamine, dobutamine, cardizem, amiodarone), insulin, ativan, and heparin.

Additional Information

• Charge nurse is designated on each unit and typically does not take patient assignments unless necessary.
• Nurse aides are present on the unit.
• Respiratory therapy equipment such as vents, CPAP, BiPAP are used.
• Scrub color/dress code: Any color.
• Travelers must secure housing that allows floating within the 60-mile radius.
• Orientation week requires clinicians to be in-state even if some modules are remote.
• Weekend requirement: 6-9 weekend shifts in a 6-week schedule.
• Holiday rotation participation may be required.
• Call or standby is rare and only for low census situations.
