Location: Burien, Washington
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

Seeking a Labor and Delivery (L&D) Registered Nurse for a 13-week travel contract. This role involves working in a Labor, Delivery, Recovery, and Postpartum (LDRP) unit with a focus on providing comprehensive care to laboring moms, newborns, and postpartum patients. The unit includes triage, labor and delivery, postpartum care, special care nursery, and circulating in the OR for C-sections.


Unit Details

  • Unit: Labor & Delivery / Postpartum / Mother-Baby
  • L&D Beds: 14 (LDRP model - laboring moms stay in the same room throughout labor and recovery)
  • OR Suites: 2 (staffed for C-sections)
  • Triage Beds: 3 (triage experience required)
  • Special Care Nursery (Level II): 5 beds for babies >1800g with conditions such as phototherapy, blood glucose management, opiate withdrawal, antibiotics, respiratory support
  • Births per Year: Approximately 1000
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
    • Active labor: 1:1
    • Dedicated baby nurse at every birth
    • Special care nursery: up to 1:3 (less based on acuity)
    • Recovered moms: 1 nurse to 2-3 couplets
    • Recovery phase: 1:1

Required Certifications & Licenses

  • Registered Nurse (RN) license in Washington State
  • BLS Certification
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Certification

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of nursing experience
  • Level II nursery experience required for Special Care Nursery
  • Experience in triage, labor and delivery, postpartum, and circulating in the OR for C-sections
  • Ability to float within the birth center (triage, labor and delivery, postpartum, nursery) but not outside the birth center unless agreed upon and experienced in that specialty
  • Scrubbing experience preferred but not required (designated PST available for the unit)

Skills and Responsibilities

  • Manage laboring patients including VBACs, multiples (twins), and at-risk patients (e.g., hypertension, hemorrhage)
  • Care for antepartum patients with preterm labor, infections, and post-op gynecological conditions
  • Circulate in C-section surgeries and assist as needed
  • Triage and transition normal newborns
  • Titrate drips such as Magnesium Sulfate and Pitocin per physician orders
  • Monitor epidurals after initiation and rate set by anesthesia
  • Interpret fetal heart monitoring strips independently (no monitor techs)
  • Work collaboratively in a team-oriented, traveler-friendly environment

Scheduling

  • 12-hour shifts: 07:00-19:30 and 19:00-07:30
  • Typically 3 shifts per week
  • Every other weekend required (Friday-Saturday for nights, Saturday-Sunday for days)
  • Holiday rotation with permanent staff
  • No call or standby requirement

Orientation & Additional Information

  • 2-day unit-specific orientation with a preceptor
  • Scrubs provided and required to be worn
  • Charge nurse on each shift oversees the department without patient load
  • Surgical tech available 24/7 for C-sections (does not provide bedside care for laboring patients)
  • OB or certified midwife in-house 24/7; neonatal hospitalists available weekdays with short transport time on weekends
  • Anesthesia dedicated to OB available on-site
  • Telemetry and centralized fetal heart monitoring available
