Job Opportunity: Director of Birth Center (Leadership)

Location: Brattleboro, Vermont
Employment Type: Temporary
Shift: Days
Hours per Day: 8
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Lead and oversee the Labor & Delivery unit, postpartum/newborn services, and associated outpatient OB-GYN clinics. Responsible for 24/7 operational leadership, strategic direction, and ensuring safe, high-quality, evidence-based maternal-child care.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership for all maternal-child health operations across inpatient and outpatient areas.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards (AWHONN, ACOG, AAP, CMS).
  • Lead perinatal safety programs aligned with AIM safety bundles and AWHONN standards.
  • Oversee implementation of clinical protocols for obstetric emergencies and multidisciplinary simulation drills.
  • Manage staffing, patient flow, and clinical escalations with 24/7 operational responsibility.
  • Lead recruitment, onboarding, evaluations, and retention activities.
  • Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and teamwork.
  • Develop and manage operational and capital budgets.
  • Lead quality improvement initiatives and data reporting on maternal morbidity, cesarean rates, and newborn outcomes.
  • Participate in hospital incident command during emergencies.
  • Collaborate across departments to coordinate care and operations.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Vermont
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Minimum of 1 year of Director of Nursing experience, including experience within the last year
  • Labor and Delivery clinical experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1-3 years of progressive leadership experience in maternal-child health.
  • Master’s degree (MSN, MHA, or related field).
  • Experience with regulatory surveys and perinatal safety programs.
  • Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) certification (highly preferred).
  • Knowledge of perinatal evidence-based practice and AWHONN staffing guidelines.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and crisis management skills.

Additional Information

  • The birthing center is a level one low-risk birth unit providing family-centered care for obstetrical patients, newborns, and pediatric patients during the perinatal period.
  • Cesarean births are performed and recovered in the unit.
  • The position requires leadership in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • The area is very rural with limited housing and public transportation options; candidates should plan accordingly.
  • Locals within 50 miles are accepted.
