Job Opportunity: Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse
Location: Berlin, Vermont
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Unit and Facility Information
- Unit: Women and Children's Unit
- Specialty: Labor and Delivery, Newborn, Postpartum, LDRP
- Unit Beds: 7 inpatient beds, 3 triage rooms
- Deliveries: Approximately 300 per year
- Facility Beds: 88 inpatient beds
- Patient Population: Labor, Delivery, Newborn, Postpartum, occasional Med/Surg overflow
- Documentation System: Epic (experience within past 2 years required)
- Medication System: Pyxis
- Nurse-Patient Ratio:
- Active Labor or on Pitocin: 1:1
- Couplets: 2 or 3 patients depending on census/acuity
- Ancillary Assistance: CNA/PCT available, 3 LNAs/Perinatal Techs usually present
- Shift Hours: 7a-7p / 7p-7a
- Rotation Schedule: Every 2 weeks
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Call Requirement: 2 twelve-hour call shifts in a rolling 4-week timeframe
- Holiday Requirement: Must work 2 out of 4 holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year's Day)
- Floating: Only as helping hands, not to take assignments
- Dress Code: Light blue scrubs (supplied), closed-toe shoes, no chipped nail polish, hair/beard no-code, jewelry removed in OR
- Special Equipment: Electronic fetal monitors, smart pumps, Mindray cardiac monitor
- Anesthesia: Not always in-house 24/7
- Ventilator Management: Respiratory Therapy
Required Qualifications
- Discipline: Registered Nurse (Labor and Delivery specialty)
- Minimum Years of Clinical Experience: 1 year in Labor and Delivery, including LDRP experience
- Prior Travel Experience: Required
- Certifications:
- Required: BLS, NRP
- Preferred: ACLS, PALS (or PEARS), STABLE
- Epic EMR experience within the past 2 years is mandatory
- Experience as a baby nurse at delivery, including:
- Neonatal resuscitations
- Assigning APGAR scores
- Administering newborn medications post-delivery
- Ability to work independently in LDRP and community hospital environment without onsite NICU
Orientation and Training
- Orientation Length: Typically 3 shifts (12 hours each)
- Specialty Testing: Unit/facility math test, N-95 fit testing
- Orientation Schedule: Bi-weekly on Mondays
Additional Requirements and Information
- Must explain any employment gaps over 90 days
- Reliable personal or rental vehicle strongly recommended (no public transportation)
- Must complete all required background checks, verifications, and health documents prior to start
- Required Health Documents:
- Physical exam within 12 months
- N95 Fit Test (3M Aura 1870+ mask required for L&D)
- Tdap vaccination within 10 years
- Negative TB test within past 12 months
- MMR, Hepatitis B, Varicella vaccination or titers
- Flu vaccination or approved exemption (declinations not accepted)
- COVID-19 vaccination or declination
- Required Background Checks:
- Criminal background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
- Vermont Adult and Child Abuse Registry search
- Education verification
- Must complete required competency exams including medication/pharmacology and color blindness testing
- Must complete facility-specific modules (Epic and Cornerstone) prior to start
- Must comply with facility dress code and telephone usage policies
- Must complete required facility-specific forms including consent forms and emergency contact forms
Scheduling and Work Expectations
- No block schedules
- Monday through Sunday coverage
- Charge nurse duties may be required after orientation
- Floating to other units only as support, not primary assignment
This position is ideal for an experienced Labor and Delivery RN with recent Epic experience, prior travel experience, and strong neonatal care skills seeking a 16-week travel assignment in a community hospital setting.
