Travel/Contract Registered Nurse (Medical Surgical)
Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
- Assignment on a Medical Surgical unit caring for adults and geriatrics with general med/surg diagnoses.
- Daily census approximately 43 patients.
- Shift: 12-hour nights (18:45 - 07:15).
- Target nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:6-7.
- Charge nurse role required for night travelers.
- Floating to similar units and alternate care locations with inpatient holding.
- Call required if assigned to prescheduled call shifts.
- Weekend assignment every other weekend.
- Must be able to work holidays.
- Possible care of COVID-19 patients.
- Assigned to Inclement Weather Team and Storm/Hurricane Team; may be required to report during catastrophic events or disasters.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina.
- Minimum 2 years of Medical Surgical nursing experience, with experience within the last year.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Experience working with adult and geriatric patients.
- Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
- Proficient in EPIC electronic health record system.
- Ability to administer insulin and heparin drips.
Unit & Patient Care Details
- Patient population: Adults and geriatrics on a general med/surg unit.
- Procedures and treatments include:
- Insulin drips
- Heparin drips
- Wound VAC dressing changes
- High flow oxygen therapy
- Occasional short-term BiPAP respiratory support (no additional training required)
- No PCU-level patients on this unit.
Orientation & Scheduling
- Unit orientation: 24 hours.
- Scheduling based on unit needs and preferences communicated to management.
- Shift options: 36 or 48 hours per week; overtime billed only after 48 hours.
- RTO (Return to Office) after booking is not allowed and cannot be worked out onsite. Excessive call-offs or RTO may lead to cancellation or denial of rehire.
Compliance & Training Requirements
- Must complete required background checks and verifications (e.g., education, licensure).
- Required health documents include:
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year.
- Immunizations: Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella.
- Drug testing within 6 months of start.
- Flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season.
- Must complete facility-specific orientation modules including medication safety and hospital policies.
- Must provide a passport-style photo for badge creation.
- Must complete Novant Health’s Corp ID setup and I-Learn training modules prior to start.
Additional Notes
- Travelers will be assigned to emergency response teams for inclement weather and disasters.
- Floating to similar units and alternate care locations is expected.
- Must be able to work holidays and every other weekend.
- No scrubs provided; navy scrubs recommended.
This position is ideal for a Medical Surgical RN with at least 2 years of experience, EPIC proficiency, and the ability to work nights, holidays, and participate in emergency response teams. Prior travel experience is not required.
