Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical Neuro (Travel/Contract)

Location: Portland, Oregon
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM - 7:00 AM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Overview

• Position floats between units based on skill set; floating to multiple facilities within reasonable distance may be required.
• On-call availability required; must remain available if shift is cancelled.
• Weekend work required every other weekend.
• Patient ratio expected: 1 nurse to 4 patients.
• Vehicle required for assignment.
• Facility type: Short Term Acute Care, teaching hospital with 536 staffed beds.
• Charting system: Epic.
• Parking: No fee.
• Scrub color: Any color allowed except OR/Cath Lab where scrubs are provided.

Required Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Oregon.
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
• Minimum of 1 year of Medical-Surgical nursing experience, with experience within the last year.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation.
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification.
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.

Certifications (as applicable)

• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
• Chemotherapy certification (if applicable)
• Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) certification (if applicable)
• IV Certification (if applicable)
• Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) (if applicable)
• Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) (if applicable)

Note: Certification requirements may vary; verify with clinical track or unit-specific requirements.

Background and Compliance Requirements

• Government-issued photo ID and Social Security Card (as applicable).
• Background check within 90 days covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years; must be updated annually.
• Education verification required for nursing degree; international education requires additional documentation.
• Drug screening: 9-panel drug screen within 12 months of start. Instant tests acceptable.
• Employment application covering at least last 5 years of employment with month/year format.
• Minimum of 2 professional references covering 1 year of employment in a comparable specialty/setting within last 3 years.
• Work history verification required if reference requirements are not met.
• Float policy acknowledgement required.

Health and Safety Requirements

• Physical exam within 1 year of start, signed by MD, NP, PA, or DO, confirming ability to work with or without accommodation.
• Fit mask test (respirator clearance) required for travel candidates; must be updated annually.
• Immunizations/vaccinations required or declination accepted for:

  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years)
  • Measles (Rubeola)
  • Mumps
  • Rubella
  • Hepatitis B (vaccination series or signed declination)
  • Varicella
  • Seasonal Flu vaccine during flu season (declination accepted)
  • COVID-19 vaccination record preferred; declinations accepted with adherence to masking policies.
• Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 12 months; must be updated annually.

Competency Requirements

• Medication test/pharmacology competency exam as applicable.
• Unit-specific competency exams and skills checklists, updated annually.
• Color blindness testing if specifically requested.

Additional Notes

• Floating to other units and facilities within the region is common and may include multiple locations in Oregon.
• Floating to certain locations may include additional incentives and accommodations.
• Epic training modules required and must be completed as assigned.
• Annual regulatory and specialty-specific training modules required via LMS platform.
• References and employment history must align with booked specialty.
