Registered Nurse – Stepdown Unit (Travel/Contract)

Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Day shift, 4 shifts per 2 weeks (4x12 hour shifts, 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM)
Hours per Week: 48


Unit Description

  • Stepdown Critical Care (SDCC) is a 12-bed unit providing care for patients requiring a level of care between ICU and progressive care units.
  • Patient population includes trauma, surgery, transplants, lung disorders, and ventilated patients.
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios: 1:3-4 on days and nights.
  • Collaboration with Critical Care Intensivist and nursing staff to ensure patient safety.
  • Drip infusions are required on all floors.
  • EPIC electronic charting system experience is required.
  • Floating is mandatory; travelers are first to float and must be prepared to float frequently to various units within the hospital system, including some specialty and trauma units.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Nebraska.
  • Minimum 2 years of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, with at least 1 year within the last year.
  • Completion of at least one travel nursing assignment.
  • Current certifications:
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by the American Heart Association
    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
    • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Experience with EPIC electronic charting system.

Facility & Work Environment

  • 100% nicotine-free facility.
  • Scrubs are mandatory: Steele gray scrubs with facility logo (provided after confirmation).
  • Parking permits available (~$55/month) or daily parking rates apply.
  • Weekend shifts: 4 weekend shifts out of 8 possible in a 4-week period (days: Sat/Sun; nights: Fri night/Sat night).
  • Return to Office (RTO) restrictions: Up to two weeks permitted; requests must be submitted with application and approved by manager.

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Government-issued photo ID required.
  • Background check within 30 days of start, including multi-county and nationwide checks, sex offender registry, federal checks, and education verification.
  • State-specific registry checks required.
  • Primary source verification of RN license and NURSYS verification required prior to start.
  • Annual physical exam and fit mask test (3M 1860 Small/Regular or 3M 1870+) required.
  • Immunizations and health screenings required:
    • Tdap within last 10 years
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray with signed questionnaire if history positive
    • 2 MMR vaccines or positive titers (boosters if low/equivocal titers)
    • Hepatitis B titer or declination
    • 2 Varicella vaccines or positive titer (boosters if low/equivocal titers)
    • Flu vaccine preferred (documentation or declination required)
    • COVID vaccine preferred (medical/religious exemption or declination accepted)
  • Drug screen within 60 days of start and updated annually (specific panel required).
  • Annual skills checklist required.
  • Two professional references from work within the past 2 years required.

Additional Notes

  • Eye exam (Snellen) required only for travelers working in the OR.
  • Orientation Safety Manual acknowledgment required.
  • Candidates must submit holiday work availability with application.
  • Facility is a top-rated acute care hospital with a teaching affiliation and advanced research environment.

This position is ideal for experienced critical care RNs comfortable with high acuity stepdown patients, frequent floating, and working in a large academic medical center environment.
