Registered Nurse (ER) - Travel/Contract
Location: New Haven, Connecticut
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each
- Day shift: 11:00 AM – 11:00 PM
- Evening shift: 3:00 PM – 3:00 AM
- Schedule: Every other weekend required
- Float: Will cross-train and float to other campuses and ED observation within scope
- Patient Ratios: Average 1:6 (days and nights)
- Orientation: Virtual orientation on Friday, onsite reporting Monday
- Guaranteed Hours: Yes
- Trauma Level: Level 1 Trauma experience required
- Unit Assignment: Assigned primarily to one campus with possible rotation to others and ED observation
- Restrictions: Travelers do not work trauma/rescue rooms, triage, or locked behavioral health units
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Connecticut
- Minimum 1.5 years of recent Emergency Department (ED) experience, including experience within the last year
- Trauma experience required
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Certifications:
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)
- National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
Compliance & Training Requirements
- Background checks including 7-year criminal history, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG
- Education verification and foreign equivalency evaluation if applicable
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam (minimum 85% score)
- Color Blind Testing (minimum 80% score)
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (required for Telemetry, MS/Tele, ER/ED, ICU, Progressive Care, Stepdown, PACU, IR/Cath Lab, Labor and Delivery)
- Language Services Training
- CAUTI Education Training (except PICU, NICU, Psychiatry/Behavioral Health)
- Suicide Risk and Environmental Assessment Training
- Mobile Heartbeat Alarm Module (except ER/ED, Pediatrics, ICU, NICU)
- Stroke Education (except Pediatric specialties and NICU)
- CLABSI Prevention Training
- Preventing Pressure Injury Training
- Patient Transportation with Oxygen Education
- Pyxis ES MedStation Training
- Baxter Pump Interoperability Training
- Patient Bedside Rounding (except OR, Behavioral Health, Ambulatory, ER/ED)
- Ventricular Assist Device Awareness (except certain campuses)
- AME Blood Administration Module (except Case Managers, Behavioral Health/Psych, Home Health)
- New Employee Orientation Module
- 21st Century Cures Act Module (required for RN except Home Health)
- ED Handbook (for ER/ED RNs)
- eCart Training Module (not required for Pediatric, Periop/OR, Outpatient, Case Managers, Home Health)
- Chaperone Policy Training
- Fire Safety Module (effective 5/4/2026)
Health & Safety Requirements
- Physical exam within 12 months of start
- Fit mask test within 12 months, updated annually (clean shaven required)
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccination highly preferred for Pediatric, Labor and Delivery, Postpartum (Tdap declination accepted)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray documentation
- Annual TB questionnaire
- Immunizations or titers for Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (declination accepted with conditions)
- 10-panel drug screen within 12 months
- Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1 - 3/31)
- COVID vaccination series preferred
Additional Requirements
- 7-year work history with no gaps greater than 90 days
- One supervisor reference within the past year (charge nurse references not accepted)
- Skills checklist within 12 months of start
- Work history verification for last 7 years (attestations not accepted)
- Attestation of prior radiation exposure if applicable to certain units
Weekend Call-Out Policy
- Missed weekend shifts must be made up on another weekend shift within 6 weeks
- Make-up shifts scheduled based on staffing needs and may replace a weekday shift to avoid overtime
- If make-up shift is missed, it will be rescheduled to the next weekend with a final warning for attendance
