Medical Surgical Registered Nurse (Med Surg RN - Urology/Nephrology)
Location: Springfield, Illinois
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Shift: Day shift, 06:45 AM – 07:15 PM
- Unit: 25 bed Medical Surgical unit with Urology/Nephrology focus
- Average Daily Census: 23 patients
- Weekend Requirement: Work every other weekend
- On-call: Not required
- Floating: May float within scope to other Medical Surgical units
- Block Scheduling: May be accommodated but not guaranteed
- Locals Accepted: Yes, no radius restrictions
- Pending License: Not accepted; must have active Illinois RN license
- Guaranteed Hours: Subject to client call-offs up to 36 hours per 13-week assignment
Required Experience & Skills
- Specialty Experience: Minimum 2 years of Medical/Surgical nursing experience required
- Travel Experience: First-time travelers accepted if they have a solid RN foundation and >2 years Med/Surg experience
- Required Work Setting Experience: Medical/Surgical and Telemetry (Tele)
- Cardiac Monitoring & Emergency Response: Telemetry remote monitoring, use of Rapid Response Teams
- Genitourinary/Renal Skills: Pre/Post Hemodialysis management, renal failure care
- IV Therapy/Phlebotomy: Blood product administration, central line blood draws, peripheral line care/management, PICC line management, starting IVs
- Medication Skills: Heparin administration
- Respiratory Care: Chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac), CPAP/BiPAP, High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC), nasal cannula, non-invasive airway management, oral suctioning, portable oxygen tank
- Professional Knowledge: Isolation precautions, wound care including wound vac
- Electronic Medical Record: Cerner experience required
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Illinois
- Minimum 2 years of Medical Surgical nursing experience, including experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement
- State License 1 Verification
- NURSYS Verification (RN, LPN/LVN, AP)
- Pre/post hemodialysis management experience
- Renal failure related case skills/experience
- Blood product administration experience
- Central line blood draw experience
- PICC line management experience
- Experience with Rapid Response Teams
- Chest tubes management experience (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
- CPAP/BiPAP experience
- High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) experience
- Non-invasive airway management experience
- Wound vac experience
Required Licenses & Certifications
- Active Illinois Registered Nurse (RN) license
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required
- ACLS and PALS may be required based on unit/specialty (AHA or RQI acceptable)
Additional Requirements
- Must be able to pass background checks including criminal, sex offender, and state-specific searches
- Physical exam within one year of start, including labs and fit mask testing as applicable
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within one year
- Drug screening (9-panel) within 30 days of start
- Immunizations or documented immunity for MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Hepatitis B, Varicella, and seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption
- Competency exam required for clinical candidates
- Photo for badge required prior to start
- References: Two professional references required

- Acute Care Hospital, Level I Trauma Center, Magnet recognized
- 562 staffed beds facility
- Scrub color: Any solid color
- Charting system: Cerner
- Parking permit required, no cost
Notes
- Candidates must have no more than 5 days of return-to-work restrictions
- Floating to other units may be required within scope of practice
- Block scheduling may be accommodated but is not guaranteed
This position is ideal for experienced Med Surg RNs with telemetry skills who are comfortable managing complex renal and urology patients in an acute care setting. First-time travel nurses with strong Med Surg backgrounds are also considered.
