Job Opportunity: Labor and Delivery Nurse

Location: Kansas City, Missouri

Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Description

• Provide nursing care in Labor, Delivery, Recovery, and Postpartum (LDRP) settings.
• Patient ratios range from 1:1 to 1:3.
• Weekend rotation required: 4-6 weekend shifts (Saturday/Sunday) plus 2 Fridays every 6 weeks.
• Holiday coverage required: 1 major holiday (Thanksgiving or Christmas) and 1-2 minor holidays (New Year's Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, or Labor Day).
• Charge RN assignments and holiday shifts as needed.
• Full couplet care required (care for mother and baby).
• Floating within the LDRP unit expected, including triage, c-section cases (including circulating), antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care.
• No block scheduling available.
• Local candidates not accepted; home must be at least 75 miles from the facility.
• On-call requirement: 2 mandatory on-call shifts every 6 weeks.

Required Experience and Skills

• Valid RN license in Missouri.
• Minimum 3 years of Labor and Delivery nursing experience, with experience within the last year.
• BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association.
• NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification.
• EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) or FHM (Fetal Heart Monitoring) certification.
• Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing.
• IV therapy and phlebotomy experience, including use of infusion pumps, drips, and IV monitoring.
• Experience circulating for C-section procedures.
• Skilled in forceps and vacuum extraction assistance.
• Management of hemorrhage and shock.
• Experience caring for recovering C-section patients.
• Proficient in amnioinfusion.
• Antepartum care experience.
• Use of external fetal heart monitoring (EFM).
• Postpartum care experience, including postpartum hemorrhage management.
• Pain management experience, including use of PCA (patient-controlled analgesia) IV pumps.

Work Environment

• Acute care hospital setting.
• Unit includes antepartum, LDRP, Level I nursery, mother/baby care.
• Facility births fewer than 100 per month.
• Charting system: Epic.
• Scrub color: Navy (provided).
• Parking: Free.

Required Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• FHM (Fetal Heart Monitoring)
• NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
• AWHONN Advanced or Intermediate certification preferred
• EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) or FHM certification required
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) not required for Labor and Delivery
• Other certifications may be required based on unit specifics (e.g., TNCC, PALS)

Required Licenses

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license for Missouri.
• Primary source verification of professional license required.
• Pending licenses not accepted.

Compliance and Background Requirements

• Government-issued ID required.
• Criminal background check within 6 months, including statewide and nationwide searches.
• Education verification of highest nursing degree required.
• Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks.
• Drug testing within 1 year, including a comprehensive panel.
• Physical exam within 1 year.
• Fit mask (N95) testing required and must be current.
• Immunizations and titers required or declination forms for:

  • Tdap
  • Measles (Rubeola)
  • Mumps
  • Rubella
  • Varicella
• Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year.
• Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season.
• Various facility-specific documents and acknowledgments (e.g., HIPAA, latex allergy, confidentiality, hand hygiene, dress code).

Additional Requirements

• Two professional references required (supervisors preferred).
• Unit-specific competency exams and skills checklists required.
• Must be willing to float within the LDRP unit and assist with various patient care needs.
• Must complete facility orientation modules prior to start.
• On-call shifts and weekend/holiday coverage mandatory.

This position is ideal for experienced Labor and Delivery RNs with strong clinical skills in maternal and newborn care, who are comfortable working in a community hospital acute care setting and meeting the specified scheduling and certification requirements.
