Registered Nurse – Stepdown Cardiac (Travel/Contract)

Location: Dayton, Ohio
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (4 shifts per week, 12 hours each; 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 48


Job Overview

  • Assignment in a Stepdown (SD) or Progressive Care Unit (PCU) with targeted patient ratios of 1:5-6.
  • ICU experience does not count toward SD/PCU experience requirement.
  • Typical patients include heart failure, chest pain rule out, NSTEMI, post-procedure patients, COPD exacerbation, drug/alcohol overdose and withdrawal.
  • Competency in running IV drips such as heparin, nitroglycerin, amiodarone, Cardizem, insulin, etc., is required.
  • Nurses will be fitted for N95 masks prior to working on the HRRU unit unless PAPR is needed/offered.
  • Navy blue scrubs required.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Ohio.
  • Minimum 1.5 years of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, including experience within the last year.
  • Experience working with a 1:5 patient-nurse staffing ratio.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Current ACLS certification.
  • Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system.

Floating and Scheduling

  • Traveler will be the first to float at employer’s discretion, floating within specialty clusters or to other nearby campuses (within 10-15 miles).
  • Must be available to work every other weekend and holidays.
  • Employer reserves the right to cancel up to 2 shifts during the 13-week contract due to low census, and to cancel the agreement with 2 weeks’ notice without penalty.
  • Travelers are not eligible for employee incentives.

Competency and Certification Requirements

  • Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam: Must be passed within 1 year prior to start or completed within 72 hours of contract signing (3 attempts allowed).
  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required within 2 years prior to start.
  • Unit-specific competency exam required within 2 years prior to start.
  • NIH Stroke Certification required within 12 months prior to start and must be updated annually.
  • Physical exam within 2 years indicating fitness to work and free of communicable diseases.
  • Respiratory protection medical questionnaire and fit testing required prior to orientation.

Health and Background Requirements

  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray (with annual questionnaire if past positive).
  • Required immunizations or proof of immunity: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (vaccination series, immune titer, or declination).
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season.
  • Drug screening: Negative 9 or 10 panel drug screen including marijuana panel within 12 months prior to documentation due date. Lab-based confirmation required if initial screen is positive.
  • 7-year criminal background check including SSN trace, national or all-state checks, sex offender registry, and EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks.
  • Fingerprinting not required for this assignment.

Documentation and Onboarding

  • Current resume/application required with clear documentation of Stepdown/PCU experience at a 1:5 ratio.
  • Two professional references within the last 2 years required (one must be a manager, supervisor, or charge nurse). Employment verification accepted if references are unavailable.
  • Skills checklist updated within 1 year prior to documentation due date.
  • Ohio driver’s license or government-issued photo ID required.
  • E-Verify compliance required prior to start.
  • Candidate agreement and annual health questionnaire must be completed prior to documentation due date.

Additional Notes

  • Overtime is paid after 48 hours worked in the contract.
  • Request for time off (RTO) must be submitted with initial application; no RTO will be added after offer acceptance. Approval is at manager’s discretion.
  • Floating assignments may include multiple nearby campuses within the same health system.
