Job Opportunity: RN - PICU
Location: Norfolk, Virginia
Employment Type: Long Term (13 weeks)
Specialty

- Cardiovascular PICU (CVPICU) experience required
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 2+ years of PICU and CVPICU experience
- Strong background in respiratory, neurosurgery, and cardiac care
- High proficiency with post-neurosurgery patients, asthmatics, trauma, status epilepticus, cleft lip/palate, craniofacial conditions, and specific medication administration (versed, narcotic analgesia)
- Experience with CRRT and diabetic patient care
- Ability to mentor new nurses
Licensure & Certifications
- BLS and PALS required
- Valid Virginia or compact nursing license
- Flu vaccination required (no exemptions)
Patient Population
- Ages from birth to early 20s, sometimes into 30s and 40s for congenital heart patients
- Approximately 98% inpatient, 2% outpatient
- Nurse to patient ratio: 1:1, 1:2, or 1:3
- Unit size: 31-40 beds
- Use of ancillary staff including CNAs
- Float support to NICU and general pediatric care floors
Common Diagnoses & Treatments
- Respiratory, neurological, and cardiac conditions
- Special procedures: ECMO, CRRT, aquapheresis, chest tube and line placements, procedural sedation
Respiratory/Airway Care
- Chest tube setup and care
- High frequency ventilators, oscillators, home vents
- Procedural sedation and rapid sequence intubation (RSI) drugs
- Tracheostomy care, CPAP/BiPAP, breathing treatments
Cardiac/Circulatory Care
- Blood and blood product administration
- Cardioversion/defibrillation
- Cooling/warming blankets
- CRRT/dialysis, CVP monitoring, ECMO
- Epicardial pacer management
- 12 lead EKG interpretation
- Post open-heart surgery care (24-48 hours)
- Rapid transfusions
Line Management & Equipment
- Drains, epidural pumps, EVD/ICP monitoring
- Feeding tubes, fistulas, PCA pumps
- PICC/central lines, Port-A-Cath care
- Syringe pumps, traction/halo/pin care
- Triple lumen catheters, wound vacs
Medications Titrated on Unit
- Amiodarone, antiarrhythmics, dobutamine, dopamine, epinephrine
- Heparin, insulin, levophed, milrinone, neosynephrine
- Nicardipine, nitroprusside, norepinephrine, propofol, vasopressin
Shift Details
- 12-hour rotating shifts
- Includes every other weekend and holidays
Note: Candidates must have current and active licensure and certifications valid for the entire 13-week assignment.
